  • Earned multiple writing awards from the Virginia Press Association
  • Was twice named Virginia’s Sports Writer of the Year
  • Known for coverage of local and high school sports
  • Recipient of outstanding service awards from Virginia High School League and All-American Football Foundation
  • Also helped give The News Leader a national profile with his coverage of events such as the Olympics, Super Bowl, World Series, Triple Crown horse races, and the Masters golf tournament.
  • Following retirement on Dec. 31, 1991, continued to write Sunday columns on historic sports topics
  • Joined media wing of Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1998 
  • Passed away in 2013 at the age of 88
