ASHLAND, Va. - The Randolph-Macon women's tennis team improved to 2-0 on the season on Sunday, gutting out a 6-3 decision over Shenandoah in ODAC action.
In doubles action, junior Angelina Sportelli (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) and sophomore Kelsie Grice (Hoover, Ala./Charlotte Country Day) teamed up to blank Shenandoah's Molly Barb and Shannon Allin 8-0 at the No. 1 position. At the No. 2 position, sophomores Molly Jesseman (Williamsburg, Va./Warhill) and Melissa Tomlin (Prince George, Va./Prince George) also triumphed convincingly, winning 8-3. Shenandoah's Amy Rapp and Caitlin Tilton scored the Hornets' only doubles point, holding off freshmen Hannah Trueblood (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) and Sarah Hinson (Nashville, N.C./Northern Nash) 8-5.
In singles, Grice and Hinson led the way, with Grice rolling to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 and Hinson winning at the No. 5 position 6-3, 6-2. Jesseman and Trueblood fought hard, but lost tough three-set decisions at the No. 4 and 6 positions respectively. Sportelli and Tomlin both squeaked out three-set wins, with Tomlin prevailing over Jeannealla Williams 3-6, 6-3, (10-4) and Sportelli taking a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Molly Barb.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Wednesday, March 11 when they travel to Washington, D.C. to take on Trinity.
