Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Michael Trentham (Midlothian, Va./James River) had a pair of extra-base hits and three RBI as the second-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team was edged 7-6 by Hampden-Sydney in ODAC action Tuesday afternoon on Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.
The Yellow Jackets (26-6-1, 12-6 ODAC) started the scoring in the second. Trentham had a leadoff triple, but was erased at the plate on a one-out fielder's choice by junior Herminio Azor (Fairfax, Va./Robinson). Azor stole second, moved to third on an error and scored on a base hit by sophomore Rick Spiers (South Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead.
After the Tigers (24-13, 10-8 ODAC) plated four in the top of the third, R-MC answered in the bottom of the frame. Senior Travis Lodge (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) homered to left, his 11th of the season, to make it a 4-2 contest. Senior Mitchell Keeler (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) lined a single up the middle and scored on a double down the left field line by Trentham as the Yellow Jackets pulled within one at 4-3.
The Yellow Jackets tied it in the fifth as senior Nick Maiolo (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) had a leadoff double, moved to third on a flyout by Keeler and scored on a sacrifice fly by Trentham to level the score at 4-4.
H-SC used solo homers in the sixth and eighth to take a 6-4 advantage. In the bottom of the eighth, Spiers reached on a two-out infield hit and came home on a double down the left field line by senior Christian Sanderson (Lynchburg, Va./Jefferson Forest) to make it a 6-5 contest.
The Tigers put up a key insurance run in the top of the ninth. In the bottom of the frame, Maiolo reached second on an error and went to third on a single by Keeler. Trentham laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved Keeler to second and brought home Maiolo to make it 7-6. Keeler moved to third on a wild pitch, but was stranded there as the game ended.
Spiers finished with three hits, one run and one RBI, while Sanderson and Keeler both had two hits.
Senior Tanner Phillips (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) retired two batters in the eighth in his 15th appearance of the season. Phillips had 66 career appearances, breaking the program mark of Dillon Sheads (2006-09).
Randolph-Macon concludes its conference season on Saturday, April 23 with a 12 noon doubleheader at Emory & Henry.
