Box Score 2 LEXINGTON, Va. - Senior James Walsh (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) tossed seven scoreless innings in the opener as the sixth-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team split an ODAC doubleheader with Washington and Lee on Friday evening.
The Yellow Jackets (15-3, 3-3 ODAC) took the opener 7-1, while falling in the nightcap 4-2 to the Generals (15-9, 3-4 ODAC).
Walsh (5-0) allowed three hits in Game 1 with one walk and three strikeouts.
The Yellow Jackets exploded for three runs with two outs in the top of the first. With one away, senior Christian Sanderson (Lynchburg, Va./Jefferson Forest) singled to right and moved to second on a groundout. A double by sophomore Cole Migliorini (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) plated Sanderson with the first run. Junior Stuart Brown (Midlothian, Va./Trinity) had a base hit to drive in Migliorini and make it 2-0. Brown advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by senior Mitchell Keeler (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) to give R-MC a 3-0 lead.
R-MC added a run with two away in the second. Sophomore Rick Spiers (South Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) had an infield single, stole second and scored on a base hit by Sanderson to give the visitors a 4-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets added to their lead in the fourth. Freshman Jeffrey Butler (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) had a leadoff double and scored on a base hit by Spiers to make it 5-0. Spiers would score on a fielder's choice by Brown to push the R-MC advantage to 6-0.
After the Generals tallied a run in the eighth, senior Nick Maiolo (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) homered in the ninth to make the final 7-1.
Spiers went 3 for 5 with two runs and one RBI, while Brown had two hits and two RBI for the Yellow Jackets.
R-MC took the lead in the third inning of Game 2. Keeler had a leadoff single and came home on a double by junior Jay Patti (Sparks, Md./Hereford). Patti was sacrificed to third and scored in a double by Sanderson to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 advantage.
W&L tallied one in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the eighth to claim the 4-2 victory.
Keeler finished with two hits and a run for the Yellow Jackets.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Tuesday, March 22, for a 3:30 p.m. home ODAC contest against Virginia Wesleyan on Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.
