Box Score 2 ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Madison Gilman (Glen Allen, Va./Patrick Henry) went 3 for 4 in the nightcap with a double and a run as the Randolph-Macon softball team opened the season by splitting a doubleheader with Frostburg State Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (1-1) took Game 2 by a score of 8-2 after the Bobcats (1-1) posted a 4-2 victory in the opener.
Gilman singled and scored on a passed ball in a two-run first in Game 2. She had a leadoff double that led to a run in the third as R-MC built a 3-0 lead. After FSU scratched for one in the fourth, the Yellow Jackets exploded for five in the fifth, keyed by a two-run double off the bat of sophomore Skylar Toth (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill). The Bobcats scored their final run in the sixth.
Sophomore Harley Jones (Broadnax, Va./Brunswick) went 1 for 2 with two walks and two runs, while sophomore Brandi Mulvena (Farnham, Va./Rappahannock) also scored twice for the Yellow Jackets.
Sophomore Melissa Rundstrom (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) earned the victory, going five innings with four hits, one run, four walks and one strikeout.
In Game 1, junior Jen Balcom (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) and sophomore Hayden Fontenot (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge) both had two hits for the Yellow Jackets.
FSU got a run in the top of the second before R-MC tallied single runs in the third and fifth to take a 2-1 lead. The Bobcats used a three-run homer in the top of the sixth to wrestle the lead back. R-MC loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but a double play ended the contest.
Freshman Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) went the distance for the Yellow Jackets, allowing four hits and fanning three in seven innings.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 28, for a noon doubleheader at home against Dickinson.
