Softball Extends Win Streak to Eight with Sweep of EMU


HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Randolph-Macon softball team swept Eastern Mennonite, behind four total home runs on the day and notched eight consecutive wins.  

The Basics:

How it Happened

Game 1:
  • Randolph-Macon started the game with a walk and a stolen base by Tori Powell (Freeman, Va./Mecklenberg County). Charlotte Boswell (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) singled a moved up to second on an error by Eastern Mennonite, as Powell stayed at third. Ashley Bush (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) had the big hit with a double to left center to plate Powell and Boswell. In the following at-bat Katerina Brabson (Chesapeake Beach, Va./Nothern) singled to bring home Bush and push the Yellow Jackets ahead 3-0. Mya Davis (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) and Kiley Lamberth (Mechanicsville, Va./Mechanicsville) had walks later in the inning and scored on a Reagan Hill (Hanover, Va./Hanover) single up the middle. The Lemon and Black used the hot start to take a 5-0 lead over the Royals. 
  • In the second inning, Boswell walked and Bush singled to start things at the plate. Brabson doubled to left center field to bring home Boswell and Brabson later scored on a Davis infield single. The two runs increased the RMC lead to 7-0. 
  • Eastern Mennonite had Aspen Jones single up the middle in the bottom half of the second inning. Payton Keesee doubled into right center field to give the Royals their first run of the game, as Jones scored. The hits kept coming on a Aliza Judd double to plate Keesee and the final run was Judd scoring on a groundout by Braxten Jones. EMU used the three run inning to cut the RMC lead to 7-3 after two complete innings. 
  • Randolph-Macon got some runs right back in the top of the third inning, Jordan Brown (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) singled to start and Powell crushed a pitch over the fence. The Lemon and Black increased the lead to 9-3.
  • In the fifth inning, Braxten Jones led off with a single and later scored on a fielding error by the Yellow Jackets on a batted ball by Maggie Mayhew. Eastern Mennonite cut its deficit to 9-4. 
  • Bailey Talley (Craigsville, Va./Buffalo Gap) doubled to begin the sixth inning for Randolph-Macon and scored on Lamberth sacrifice flyout. 
  • In the seventh inning, Jacy Ramos (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) walked, Powell reached on a fielding error by the Royals and Boswell walked to load up the bases. Talley singled home Ramos and Powell, but Boswell would be thrown out at third base. RMC got back-to-back doubles by Brabson and Lamberth. Talley scored on the Brabson hit and Brabson crossed home on the Lamberth hit. The final run of the game for the Lemon and Black would be Lamberth scoring on a Samantha Pollard (Mechanicsville, Va./Mechanicsville) single. RMC boosted its lead to 15-4. 
  • The Royals did score three runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning, but the lead proved to be to much for Randolph-Macon, taking home the game one victory 15-7.      
By the Numbers
  • Kailey Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va./Colonial) started the game for the Yellow Jackets, tossing 1.1 innings and gave up two runs on five hits and struck out two. 
  • Courtney Guthrie (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) was first in relief and pitched five innings for the win, allowing five runs on seven hits and fanned four. 
  • Sierra Kegley (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) finished the two outs in the seventh inning, striking out both batters faced. 
  • Brabson led the offense, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs. 
  • Powell, Bush, Talley and Lamberth all ended the game with two RBIs each. 
  • Davis, Hill and Pollard all recorded an RBI in the opening game. 
How it Happened

Game 2:
  • Randolph-Macon started the scoring in the third inning with a two-run homer by Brabson, giving the early lead to the Yellow Jackets at 2-0. 
  • The Royals cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the inning, Judd singled up the middle and scored Keesee that singled earlier in the inning. 
  • In the fourth inning, Davis singled on a bunt and scored on a Hill two-run bomb to put RMC farther out in front at 4-1. 
  • The third home run of the game came from Bush in the fifth inning, cranking a solo shot over the left field fence. In the seventh, Brabson knocked in Boswell on a single.  
  • The home run derby style of game allowed the Lemon and Black to defeat Eastern Mennonite 6-1 and secure the sweep.
By the Numbers
  • Kegley started the game for the Lemon and Black, tossing seven innings only giving up one run on seven hits.
  • Brabson ended game two, going 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs. 
  • Hill hit a two-run homer on a 2-for-4 game. 
  • Bush recorded the final RBI on her home run.
For the Record
  • Powell moved past Carrie Barchick '08 for seventh all-time in program history in stolen bases with 37 in her career.
