Leavenworth Named as Softball Head Coach

8/17/2026 11:56:00 AM

ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon College Athletics is pleased to announce the appointment of Sarah Leavenworth as the new Head Coach of the Softball program.

Leavenworth joins the Yellow Jackets with more than a decade of collegiate head coaching experience and a strong commitment to student-athlete development, competitive excellence, academic success, and program leadership.

She joins Randolph-Macon after serving as head softball coach and assistant athletic director for student-athlete leadership and development at Muhlenberg College since 2019. During her seven seasons with the Mules, Leavenworth compiled a 132-108 record and guided the program to its most successful season in school history in 2026.

Under her leadership, Muhlenberg posted a 36-13 record in 2026, setting a school record for wins by any sport. The Mules captured the first NCAA Regional championship in program history and advanced to the NCAA Super Regional, earning an at-large NCAA Tournament bid and defeating three nationally ranked teams during regional play. The team finished the season ranked as high as 15th nationally.

Leavenworth was named Centennial Conference and NFCA Region V Coaching Staff of the Year following the historic season. The 2026 squad also established multiple school records, including marks for hits, runs, stolen bases, strikeouts, and shutouts. Seven players earned conference or regional honors, including the Centennial Conference Rookie of the Year and NFCA Region V Freshman of the Year.

Her coaching philosophy emphasizes leadership, accountability, personal growth, and academic achievement while creating an environment that allows student-athletes to excel both on and off the field. In 2026, Muhlenberg softball posted a 3.786 team GPA, with 28 of 30 student-athletes earning Dean's List recognition and eight earning a perfect 4.0 GPA.

"It was obvious immediately that Sarah has a track record of success. Her experience as a head coach, not only rebuilding programs, but competing on the national stage was something that really stood out to us," said Associate Director of Athletics MK Geratowski. "Sarah's understanding of our mission to develop the mind and character of our student-athletes paired with her competitive nature made her the ideal candidate to lead our softball program."

Prior to her time at Muhlenberg, Leavenworth served as head softball coach at Wilkes University from 2015-19. She compiled an 86-70 record and led the program to its first winning season since 2008, three consecutive 20-win seasons, and its first MAC Freedom Conference Tournament berth since 2008. During her tenure, she coached 20 All-MAC Freedom selections, including the 2018 MAC Freedom Player of the Year, and two NFCA All-East Region honorees.

Leavenworth began her collegiate coaching career at Moravian College, where she served as an assistant coach and pitching coach before becoming associate head coach. From 2009-14, she helped lead the Greyhounds to a 165-55 record, three consecutive Landmark Conference championships, and three NCAA Division III Eastern Regional appearances. Moravian also advanced to the 2010 NCAA Division III Women's College World Series following a program-record 34-15 season.

She also spent the 2014-15 season as the first assistant softball coach and pitching coach at the University of Delaware, helping the Blue Hens to a 30-23 record and contributing to the development of two CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, two All-Northeast Region honorees, and three CAA Second Team selections.

"I am incredibly grateful and truly excited to be named the next head softball coach at Randolph-Macon College," said Leavenworth. I want to thank Athletic Director Jeff Burns, Associate Director of Athletics Victoria Wilson, Associate Director of Athletics and Senior Woman Administrator MK Geratowski, and the entire athletics administration for this opportunity and for their belief in me and the vision we share for the program. From the very first conversations, it was clear that Randolph-Macon is a special place that values excellence both on the field and in the classroom, and that commitment to the student-athlete experience aligns perfectly with what I believe in. The history of Yellow Jacket softball is one of sustained excellence, resilience, and national success. I am honored to step into a program with such a proud tradition and look forward to building on that foundation while continuing to develop competitive, high-character young women who represent Randolph-Macon with pride. I am eager to bring my energy, work ethic, and passion to Ashland. I can't wait to get started, meet our student-athletes, and begin writing the next chapter together. Go Jackets!"

A former standout collegiate player, Leavenworth earned First Team All-Conference and First Team All-Southern Region honors at Mississippi University for Women in 2003 and was named a Second Team All-American. She also earned NFCA Division I National Player of the Week honors while playing at the University of New Mexico and was part of a University of Southern Mississippi team that captured an NCAA Division I Southern Regional championship and advanced to the Women's College World Series.

Randolph-Macon Athletics looks forward to the leadership, experience, and enthusiasm Leavenworth will bring to the softball program as the Yellow Jackets continue their pursuit of excellence both competitively and academically.
