Jackson Tosses No-Hitter to Guide Softball to Sweep Over Averett


ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon softball team swept Averett, behind a no-hitter tossed by Kailey Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va./Colonial) in game one and a five RBI day by Mya Davis (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield). 

The Basics:

How it Happened

Game 1:
  • Randolph-Macon got Charlotte Boswell (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) to double with one out in the first inning. Katerina Brabson (Chesapeake Beach, Md./Northern) clutched up with two outs and singled up the middle to score Boswell and give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead. 
  • In the second inning, Davis led off with a triple down the right field line. Reagan Hill (Hanover, Va./Hanover) produced a groundout to first base to allow Davis to scamper home and double the RMC lead to 2-0. 
  • The Lemon and Black opened up the game in the third inning, as Powell began the inning with a walk. Boswell reached on an error by Averett to move Powell to third and have runners on the corners. Ashley Bush (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) drew a walk to put more pressure on the Cougar defense with loading up the bases. Avery Shifflett (Ruckersville, Va./William Monroe) was sent in to pinch run for Randolph-Macon for Bush. Brabson reached on a fielders choice but Averett threw out Powell at home for the first out of the inning. Davis singled into left field to plate both Boswell and Shifflett. Hill reached on a fielders choice but Brabson was able to score during the play. The final run of the inning came on a Jordan Brown (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) single into right field to score Davis and pump the lead to 6-0 for RMC. 
  • In the fifth inning, Kiley Lamberth (Mechanicsville, Va./Mechanicsville) reached on a two out error by the Cougars. Davis ended the game with a two run bomb over the left field fence in the next at-bat. Randolph-Macon used the big three run inning to defeat Averett by a score of 8-0. 
By the Numbers
  • Jackson started the game for the Yellow Jackets, tossing five no-hit innings. The sophomore tossed her second no-hitter of the season and added three strikeouts during the game. 
  • Davis led the offense with a homer, a triple and totalled three RBIs. 
  • Hill ended the game with two RBIs for the Yellow Jackets.  
  • Brabson and Brown both had an RBI each. 
How it Happened

Game 2:
  • The scoring didnt begin until the third inning for the Yellow Jackets. Hill began the inning with a double into left field and scored on a Brown sacrifice flyout. Randolph-Macon would take the lead 1-0 after three full innings. 
  • Averett did fight back at the plate in the top of the fifth inning. Nina Luangrath led off the inning with a single up the middle and Lily Strittmatter was sent into pinch run. The Yellow Jackets were able to get two outs in the inning, but Kennidy Kerby singled to bring home Strittmatter to tie up the game at 1-1. 
  • In the bottom half of the fifth inning, Riley Koscinski (Chesterfield, Va./Manchester) led of the inning with an infield single and Shifflett pinch ran. Brown continued the inning with a bunt single and both runners moved into scoring position on a passed ball. Bush reached on an error by the Cougars and allowed Shifflett to score. Brabson kept the bats hot with a single to bring home Brown. The final two runs of the inning came on a Davis single up the middle to score Brabson and Bush. Randolph-Macon took the lead back at 5-1. 
  • Powell walked in the sixth inning and later scored on a Bush bunt single to extend the Yellow Jacket lead to 6-1. 
  • Sierra Kegley (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) got the final three outs of the game in the seventh inning to secure the 6-1 win in game two.  
By the Numbers
  • Kegley started the game for the Lemon and Black, tossing seven innings and gave up one run on five hits. The freshman added three strikeouts to her score line.
  • Davis led the team with two RBIs in the game. 
  • Brabson, Bush and Brown all recorded an RBI for the Yellow Jackets.
For the Record
  • Powell moved past Sharese Jarvis '15 into eighth in career stolen bases with 34.
