Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. – Junior Tim Benjamin (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) drove in five and sophomore Mitchell Keeler (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) knocked in four as second-seeded Randolph-Macon battered No. 5 Lynchburg 18-10 Saturday afternoon in an elimination game in the ODAC Baseball Tournament at City Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets (24-14) will face third-seeded Bridgewater tonight at 8:00 p.m. in another elimination contest. The winner will have to defeat No. 1 Shenandoah twice tomorrow to claim the conference crown.
R-MC scored in six of the first seven innings, including five in the first and seven in the fifth. Benjamin had a three-run double to spark the five-run first. After the Hornets (24-13) scored eight in the top of the fourth, Benjamin delivered an RBI single and Keeler followed with a two-run double to give the Yellow Jackets a 9-8 advantage.
Lynchburg tied the game at 9-9 with a run in the top of the fifth, but R-MC regained control with seven in the bottom of the frame. Benjamin had an RBI double and he scored on a two-run homer by Keeler as the Yellow Jackets took a commanding 16-9 lead.
R-MC pounded out 16 hits. Benjamin, Keeler and freshman Stuart Brown (Midlothian, Va./Trinity) each had three hits and three runs. Sophomore Nicholas Maiolo (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) had two hits, including a double, three runs and two RBI, while sophomore Michael Wallman (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) added two hits and two runs.
While many pitchers struggled in the game, sophomore Tanner Phillips (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) was strong in four innings of relief. He allowed five hits and just one run with one strikeout to raise his record to 2-0.
