#5 R-MC Knocks Off #4 Roanoke 15-13 in ODAC Quarterfinals

SALEM, Va. - Junior Betsy Hebert (Lutherville, Md./Roland Park Country) and sophomore Katie Russo (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) both had three goals and one assist as fifth-seeded Randolph-Macon defeated No. 4 Roanoke 15-13 Tuesday evening in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Championship.

The Yellow Jackets (10-7) will play at top-seeded Washington & Lee in the ODAC semifinals on Saturday, April 26 at 1 p.m.

As it did a season ago, R-MC lost to Roanoke during the regular season and defeated the Maroons in the first round of the ODAC Tournament. The Yellow Jackets lost 22-14 at Roanoke this past Saturday to conclude the regular season.

R-MC never trailed in the contest, scoring five of the game's first six goals in the initial eight minutes. Senior Audrey Hester (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) netted two of her first three goals during that early rally. The Yellow Jackets stretched the lead to six at 10-4 with eight minutes remaining in the period. The Maroons scored the next two goals before Hebert had a goal and assisted on another before the end of the half as R-MC took a 12-6 advantage at intermission.

Roanoke tallied five of the first six goals in the second period to narrow the margin to two at 13-11. Russo logged her third goal with 9:19 left to make it 14-11. Roanoke scored 30 seconds later to cut the margin back to two at 14-12. Sophomore Jenelle Whitman (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) found the back of the net on an assist by Russo with 6:37 left to extend the margin to 15-13. The Maroons scored the game's final goal with just over six minutes left to make the final 15-13.

Whitman had two goals and one assist for R-MC. She also led the Yellow Jackets with five ground balls and nine draw controls.

Freshman goalkeeper Jamie Langbein (Olney, Md./Sherwood) recorded eight saves for the Yellow Jackets.
