Softball Falls to #1 Virginia Wesleyan in Friday Afternoon Twinbill


VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Randolph-Macon softball battled in a conference road contest against #1 Virginia Wesleyan on Friday afternoon. 

The Basics:

Records: Randolph-Macon (15-13, 2-6 ODAC), Virginia Wesleyan (26-0, 10-0 ODAC)

How it Happened

Game 1:
  • Virginia Wesleyan started the scoring in the first inning, beginning with a leadoff walk by Laci Campbell. The Marlins put the pressure on the bases, as Campbell stole second, she tried to steal third and a Randolph-Macon error allowed VWU to take an early 1-0 lead. 
  • In the third inning, Sarah Prosser recorded the first hit in the game by either team with a single. The Yellow Jackets worked the inning to get two outs on the board, but Morgan Tucker singled home Prosser and pushed the VWU lead to 2-0. 
  • Randolph-Macon did create a potential threat in the sixth inning, as Alyssa Meharg (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) and Tori Powell (Freeman, Va./Mecklenberg County) reached on a fielding errors by the Marlins. The Yellow Jackets had two runners on base with one out, but Virginia Wesleyan worked out of danger to keep RMC off the board. 
  • In the seventh inning, Charlotte Boswell (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) got the first hit of the game for the Lemon and Black. The hit led off the inning and the Marlins worked out of the inning to get the game one win by a score of 2-0.  
By the Numbers
  • Kailey Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va./Colonial) started the game for the Yellow Jackets, tossing six innings and gave up two runs on four hits. 
  • Boswell had the lone hit in the game for the Lemon and Black. 
  • Mya Davis (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) drew a walk in the game for Randolph-Macon.  
How it Happened

Game 2:
  • In the first inning, Virginia Wesleyan saw Samantha Deitsch single with one out, steal second and put herself into scoring position. The Marlins got a clutch hit by Taylor McQueen to score Deitsch and give VWU the 1-0 lead. 
  • The Marlins kept he pressure on in the second inning. Olivia Knight led of the inning with a walk and Karley Beltran doubled to put runners in scoring position with one out. Knight and Beltran both scored on a Yellow Jacket wild pitch to increase the Virginia Wesleyan lead to 3-0. 
  • Randolph-Macon received back-to-back hits in the third inning with a Reagan Hill (Hanover, Va./Hanover) double and an infield single by Meharg. Powell moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. The Marlins managed to get out of danger and hold their 3-0 lead. 
  • In the fourth inning, Prosser drew a walk and scored on a Deitsch double into left center field. Virginia Wesleyan kept the hits coming with a Morgan Tucker double to trade places with Deitsch at second base. The final run of the inning came from McQueen that singled up the middle to plate Tucker and the Marlins boosted their lead to 7-0. 
By the Numbers
  • Sierra Kegley (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) started the game for the Lemon and Black, tossing 3.2 innings and gave up seven runs on nine hits. The freshman added three strikeouts to her score line. Jackson pitched the final 2.1 innings and allowed only one hit. 
  • Hill ended the game going 3-for-3 with a double. 
  • Kiley Lamberth (Mechanicsville, Va./Mechanicsville), Riley Koscinski (Chesterfield, Va./Manchester) and Meharg all recorded a hit.

Randolph-Macon will be back at home for senior day to take on Guilford on Saturday, April 11.
