Strong Pitching Propels #24 Softball to Sweep Over Greensboro


ASHLAND, Va. – The 24th – ranked Randolph-Macon softball team used great play in the circle and at the plate to sweep Greensboro in a midweek showdown at Randolph-Macon College. 

The Basics:

Scores: Randolph-Macon 7, Greensboro 3, Randolph-Macon 7, Greensboro 0

How it Happened

Game 1:
  • In the first inning, Anna Frazier and Raven Taylor hit back-to-back singles and moved up on a passed ball into scoring position. Paydon Reynolds put down a squeeze bunt to score Frazier to give the Pride a 1-0 lead. Olivia Hyatt singled home Taylor to double the Greensboro lead to 2-0.
  • Randolph-Macon saw Mya Davis (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) reach by a catcher's interference to begin the bottom half of the inning. Charlotte Boswell (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) drew a two out walk and both Davis and Boswell moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Ripley Barry (Buchanan, Va./James River) loaded up the bases with a walk in the next at-bat. Jacy Ramos (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) clutched up with a single down the right field line to score Davis and Boswell to tie up the game at 2-2. Ashley Bush (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) followed suit with a two-out single up the middle, scoring Barry and Ramos and gave RMC a 4-2 lead. 
  • The Yellow Jackets added one run in the second inning, Davis was hit by a pitch and came home on a Boswell triple into right field. 
  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, Tori Powell (Freeman, Va./Mecklenberg County) hit a two-run bomb over the center field fence to extend the RMC lead to 7-2.
  • Greensboro had Frazier double into left center field and scored on a fielding error by the Lemon and Black at third base, as the Pride still trail 7-3 in the fifth inning. 
  • In the bottom of the sixth inning, Powell singled through the left side of the infield, stole second and scored on a Davis single up the middle. The lead grew to 8-3 for the Lemon and Black with three outs to get. 
  • Randolph-Macon allowed one runner on base but got out of the inning and won the game 8-3.   
By the Numbers
  • Jackson started the game and received the win in complete game fashion. The sophomore gave up three runs on five hits and struck out five. 
  • Powell ended the game with a homer, two RBIs and a stolen base.
  • Bush knocked in two runs in the game for the Lemon and Black. 
  • Ramos recorded two RBIs and a stolen base.
  • Boswell had a triple and an RBI in the game. 
  • Davis tallied an RBI, two runs scored, two stolen bases and a hit by pitch. 
How it Happened

Game 2:
  • Randolph-Macon started the scoring in game two with a solo home run by Bush in the second inning, giving the lead to the Yellow Jackets. 
  • In the fourth inning, Ramos led off the inning with a single and later scored on a Jordan Brown (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) single and doubled the Lemon and Black lead to 2-0. 
  • Powell and Davis hit back-to-back singles to begin the fifth inning for Randolph-Macon. Reagan Hill (Hanover, Va./Hanover) moved the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt and Boswell walked to load up the bases with one out. Ramos knocked in Powell with a single through the left side of the infield and Ellie Herndon (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) followed suit with a single to bring home Davis. The third and final run of the inning was scored on a Bailey Talley (Craigsville, Va./Buffalo Gap) groundout to plate Boswell from third. The trio of runs ran the Yellow Jacket lead to 5-0. 
  • Sierra Kegley (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) had a no-hitter going through 5.1 innings for the Lemon and Black, only giving up three walks during that span. The freshman gave up the first Greensboro hit of the game in the sixth inning. 
  • In the sixth inning, Powell drew a walk and Davis hit her first career homer over the left field fence. The sophomore gave Randolph-Macon a 7-0 lead with her blast with three outs to get in the seventh.
  • Kegley allowed two hits in the seventh, but did not give up a run, recording the win and giving RMC the 7-0 win. 
By the Numbers
  • Kegley recorded the complete game shutout, giving up only three hits and three walks. The freshman also added three strikeouts to her stat line.
  • Powell was perfect at the plate going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk. 
  • Davis recorded a two RBI day with her homer in the sixth inning. 
  • Ramos, Herndon, Bush, Talley and Brown all had one RBI in the game for the Yellow Jackets.
