Ellis' 15 Strikeouts Headlines Split for #24 Softball in Super Regionals


BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The 24th – ranked Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets got a masterful performance in the circle by Gracie Ellis (New Kent, Va./New Kent) in game one to headline a split in the first two games of the Bethlehem Super Regional.

How It Happened 

(Game 1)

  • Randolph-Macon had two chances throughout the first seven innings to put themselves into the lead. They were held off the scoreboard by Moravian in those chances. 
  • Moravian was held in check for the most post in the first seven innings by Yellow Jacket pitcher Gracie Ellis (New Kent, Va./New Kent). The senior recorded eight punch outs in the first seven innings to keep the game scoreless at 0-0. 
  • The game would head to the 12th inning and Randolph-Macon received singles by Ellis, Blayne Talley (Richmond, Va./Cosby) and Amanda Lanyon (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) to load up the bases. Kayla Davis (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) drew a two out walk to walk in Ellis to push the Lemon and Black ahead. The big hit of the inning came from Reagan Hill (Hanover, Va./Hanover) with a two RBI single to let Talley and Lanyon home. Randolph-Macon added two more runs in the inning to take a commanding 5-0 lead. 
  • Ellis sat down Moravian in order in the bottom half of the 12th inning to end the extra inning marathon with a 5-0 win for the Yellow Jackets.     

By The Numbers

  • Ellis started the game for the Lemon and Black, tossing twelve shutout innings, giving up four hits. The senior also struck out 15 batters and grabbed her 25th win of the season.
  • Lanyon led the offense going 4-for-6 with a run scored. 
  • Naomi Sadler (Emporia, Va./Brunswick), Tori Powell (Freeman, Va./Mecklenberg County), Talley and Hill had recorded two hits for the Lemon and Black. Hill led the group with two RBIs in the game. 

How It Happened 

(Game 2)

  • Lanyon led off the second game with a hit by pitch for Randolph-Macon. Sadler singled through the left side of the infield to put two runners on with no outs. Hill moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt and Lanyon scored on a squeeze bunt by Boswell. Sadler ended the inning by crossing home on a fielding error by Moravian to push the Lemon and Black in front 2-0. 
  • The Greyhounds received a big two out base hit by Lindsey Gawrys to knock in both Kyra Holtje and Sarah DeStefano to tie up the game at 2-2. 
  • Moravian added four runs on five hits in the top of the third inning to take a 6-2 lead. Holtje had the big two RBI double to highlight the inning for the Greyhounds. 
  • Gawrys came through again for Moravian in the top of the fifth inning, scoring both Holly Walter and Holtje. The two runs pushed the Greyhounds into a commanding 8-2 lead. 
  • In the top of the seventh inning, Marcie Silverman drove in two more runs with a single to up the Moravian lead to 10-2. 
  • Powell double and Katerina Brabson (Chesapeake Beach, Md./Northern) singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Madison Faries (Colonial Heights, Va./Colonial Heights) pinch ran for Brabson and on a Talley double off the fence scored along with Powell. Lanyon doubled home Talley to complete the scoring in game two, as Moravian extended the super regional with a 10-5 win.  

By The Numbers

  • Guthrie started the game for the Lemon and Black, tossing two innings and gave up three runs on five hits. Kailey Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va./Colonial) and Brabson completed the final five innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits. 
  • Lanyon completed a 6-for-9 day with two hits in game two, adding two doubles and an RBI to her credit. 
  • Talley recorded a two RBI double in the seventh inning for the Yellow Jackets. 
  • Boswell ended the day with the last RBI for Randolph-Macon.  

Up Next

The Yellow Jackets will take on Moravian in a winner-take-all game three tomorrow morning at 11 am. The winner will punch their ticket to the 2025 Softball DIII College World Series.
