Guthrie Shutout, Powell Homer Highlights #14 Softball Sweep of EMU


ASHLAND, Va. - The 14th – ranked Randolph-Macon used impressive pitching in both games of the doubleheader to sweep Eastern Mennonite and start conference play with a perfect 10-0 record.  

The Basics:

How it Happened

Game 1:
  • Amanda Lanyon (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) began the bottom of the first inning with a walk and stole second on the next pitch. She later scored on a Reagan Hill (Hanover, Va./Hanover) groundout to second base to put the Yellow Jackets up 1-0.
  • In the second inning, Kayla Davis (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) led off with a walk and Alyssa Meharg (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) was sent in to pinch run. Meharg swiped second base and crossed home on a screaming double by Jordan Brown (Yorktown, Va./Tabb). 
  • Randolph-Macon began the third inning with a solo homer by Tori Powell (Freeman, Va./Mecklenburg County), as she continues her hot play at the plate. The home run put the Lemon and Black up to a 3-0 lead.
  • In the top of the sixth inning the Royals got three straight singles to load up the bases with one out. Destiny Jones hit a double down the left field line to score to runs for Eastern Mennonite. The Royals had two runners in scoring position and the Lemon and Black picked off Emerson Adkins at third base for the second out. Ellis finished the inning forcing a pop out in the infield to preserve the Randolph-Macon lead at 3-2. 
  • Eastern Mennonite hit a two out single in the seventh inning to represent the tying run, Ellis finished off the game to get the Yellow Jackets a close 3-2 game one win.    
Inside the Numbers:
  • Ellis ended the game as the winning pitcher and would record her fourteenth win of the season. The senior threw seven complete innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. Ellis struck out three batters in game one to lead Randolph-Macon to the game one victory.  
  • Powell hit her second homer of the season.
  • Brown and Hill each had an RBI in the first game. 
  • Lanyon ended the game with two walks and two stolen bases and a run scored for the Yellow Jackets. 
How it Happened

Game 2: 
  • Randolph-Macon began game two with a Lanyon single up the middle and a Powell walk. Hill reached on a fielders choice that saw Powell get out at second, Hill would steal second to put both runners into scoring position. Mya Davis (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) clutched up at the plate and hit a triple down the left field line to score Lanyon and Hill and gave the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead.
  • Lanyon led off the third inning with a single into right center field. She would later score on a Charlotte Boswell (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) sacrifice flyout to extend the lead for the Lemon and Black to 3-0.
  • Courtney Guthrie (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) was dominant all game, not getting very much pressure on the base paths from the Royals. The junior would shutdown Eastern Mennonite in the final innings to secure the game two victory and the doubleheader sweep. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Guthrie pitched seven innings and allowed only three hits and struck out three in game two. The junior recorded her ninth win of the season in ten starts for the Lemon and Black.
  • Mya Davis hit a two RBI triple to lead the Yellow Jackets at the plate. 
  • Lanyon ended the second game with two hits, two runs scored and two stolen bases. 
  • Boswell was responsible for the final RBI of the game.

Randolph-Macon will head on the road for a conference matchup with Bridgewater on April 8 at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
