How it Happened

Game 1:
  • In the second inning, Charlotte Boswell (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) began with a walk and moved over to second on a Kayla Davis (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) infield single. The runners moved up to second and third on an Averett wild pitch and Boswell scored on a Gracie Ellis (New Kent, Va./New Kent) groundout to second base. Ellis shut down the Cougars in the bottom half of the inning to keep Randolph-Macon ahead 1-0.
  • Boswell again would leadoff an inning by reaching base, this time with a single into right center field. The freshman stole second and later in the inning crossed home on a double steal, as Blayne Talley (Richmond, Va./Cosby) drew a throw to second base. In the bottom half of the inning, Averett would again not respond and the Lemon and Black took a slim 2-0 lead into the fifth inning.
  • In the seventh inning, Jacy Ramos (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) singled into right center field to begin the inning. Ramos later scored on a Amanda Lanyon (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) two-run homer. The home run doubled the Yellow Jacket lead to 4-0 with three outs to get.
  • Ellis sat down the Cougars in order in the bottom half of the inning, shutting the door completely and securing a 4-0 game one win.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Ellis ended the game as the winning pitcher and would record her eleventh win of the season. The senior threw seven complete innings for the shutout, allowing only one total hit. Ellis struck out eight batters and only hit one batter in game one. The New Kent native also knocked in a run at the plate for Randolph-Macon.
  • Lanyon notched her third homer of the season with her two run bomb in the top of the seventh inning.
  • Davis and Talley both recorded a multi-hit game with two overall.
How it Happened

Game 2:
  • The Yellow Jackets started early in the second game at the plate. Lanyon led off the game with a single up the middle and stole second during the next at-bat.  Reagan Hill (Hanover, Va./Hanover) doubled into short left field to put both runners in scoring position with one out. Talley doubled into right center field to bring home Lanyon and Hill, giving Randolph-Macon a 2-0 lead.
  • Lanyon began the third inning with a double into left center field and in the very next at, Tori Powell (Freeman, Va./Mecklenburg County) doubled down the left field line. Lanyon scored on the Powell double, Averett limited the damage to one run but the lead grew to 3-0 for the Lemon and Black.
  • The Cougars did create a scoring threat in the bottom of the fourth inning, starting with a leadoff triple. Courtney Guthrie (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) worked through danger with two fielder's choice outs and a strikeout, keeping Averett off the board.
  • In the fifth inning, Boswell and Talley hit back-to-back one out singles. Boswell scored the fourth run of the game for Randolph-Macon on a throwing error by the Cougars. Mya Davis (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) pinch hit for Guthrie and knocked in Talley on a groundout to shortstop. Avery Shifflett (Ruckersville, Va./William Monroe) pinch ran for Kayla Davis and scored on a Ashley Bush (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) single into left field. The three run inning would extend the Yellow Jacket lead to 6-0.
  • Randolph-Macon added one more run in the top half of the sixth inning, as Boswell scored Lanyon on a sacrifice flyout to left field.
  • The Cougars would score two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and add one more run in the bottom of the seventh, but the seven straight runs by Randolph-Macon would prove to be too much. The Lemon and Black recorded a 7-3 victory and continued conference play unbeaten.
Inside the Numbers:

  • Lanyon ended the second game going 3-for-3 with two doubles and two stolen bases.
