How It Happened
  • Washington and Lee went up 2-0 in the first five minutes of the game with goals by Sophie Edwards and Claire Horner. The Yellow Jackets would cut the lead in half with a free position opportunity and goal by Cami McNeally (Severna Park, Md./Archbishop Spalding) with 7:27 left in the first period. Ellen Stark (McLean, Va./Oakcrest) got the start in goal and was huge for the Lemon and Black. Stark made three saves in row to keep the Generals off the board. The saves created chances for the Randolph-Macon offense and Taylor Mittelstadter (Chesterfield, Va./Manchester) buried a shot in the net, tying up the game at 2-2 with 3:30 left in the period. Stark held Washington and Lee off the board with two more saves in the final three minutes, sending the 2-2 scoreline into the second period.
  • In the second period, Horner recorded her second goal of the game at the 12:17 mark to give the Generals a 3-2 lead. Neither team would score for the next eight minutes, until Evie McNeally (Severna Park, Md./Archbishop Spalding) found the back of the net and tied the game back up at 3-3. Washington and Lee would score with a goal by Katie Reed with 2:37 left in the period, taking a slim 4-3 lead into halftime.
  • Randolph-Macon struck first in the third period as Lowery beat her defender and ripped a shot past the Generals goalkeeper. The goal would tie up the game once again, this time at the 10:10 mark in the third period. The back and forth would continue between both teams, Hannah Van Son made a good move towards goal and finished with the goal. Washington and Lee took the lead back into its favor at 5-4 with 7:05 on the clock. Van Son added to the Generals lead with her second straight goal to extend the lead to 6-4. Anna Snoddy (Palmyra, Va./Fluvanna County) put some momentum back the side of the Lemon and Black with a goal on a free position attempt, cutting the deficit to 6-5 with 2:35 on the clock. Washington and Lee got the goal back with a nice feed from Reedie Warwick to Emma Marsh to score and take a two goal lead back at 7-5.
