Davis' Late Game Heroics Lifts #11 Softball over Eastern

SALISBURY, Md. - Kayla Davis (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) hit a two out; two-run home run in the tenth inning to break the 1-1 score to send the Yellow Jackets into the winners bracket game with a 3-1 victory over Eastern University.

The Basics

Score: (3) Randolph-Macon 3, (2) Eastern 1
Location: Salisbury, Md. // Salisbury University // Margie Knight Sea Gull Softball Stadium
Records: Randolph-Macon: 32-5-2 // Eastern: 30-7

How It Happened
  • Randolph-Macon started off the post-season with bang, as Rilee Baughan (Warsaw, Va. Rappahannock) hit a solo homer over the left field fence in the first inning.
  • Jania Long tied up the game with a solo homer of her own in the bottom of the second inning for the Eagles.
  • The Yellow Jackets saw a marvelous outing in the circle from Gracie Ellis (New Kent, Va./New Kent). The junior did not allow Eastern to get a runner to second base until the ninth inning, after giving up the home run in the second inning. Ellis recorded twelve punch outs in the seven inning span. Randolph-Macon had its own struggles at the plate, but Ellis managed to keep the Lemon and Black in the game with her performance.
  • Eastern did get the winning run on first base in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Eagles hit a two-out single, but the runner took a wide turn past second base and the Yellow Jackets threw her out at second to end the potential threat.
  • Baughan started the two-out rally with a double in the top of the tenth inning that nearly cleared the fence for her second homer of the game. Davis found her pitch in the following at-bat and sent the ball over the left field to give Randolph-Macon a 3-1 lead.
  • Ellis let up only a triple in the bottom half of the tenth inning and made the final batter ground out to second base to clinch a 3-1 win for the Yellow Jackets.
By The Numbers
  • Ellis recorded her nineteenth win of the season in the circle for the Yellow Jackets. The junior allowed one run on nine hits and fanned thirteen opposing batters in ten complete innings. Ellis also tallied two hits at the plate for an all-around masterful game for the New Kent native.
  • Baughan ended the game going 3-for-5 with a home run, two doubles.
  • Davis went 2-for-3 with the go-ahead two-run home run and the junior also walked once.
