ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon women's tennis team defeated Roanoke in an intense wire-to-wire matchup 6-3 in ODAC action on Wednesday afternoon at the Banks Tennis Center.
The Yellow Jackets came away with two points from doubles play. In first doubles
Camilla Thurman (Knoxville, Tenn./Knoxville Catholic) and
Catherine Mowry (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian Academy) secured a close 8-5 victory to get the match rolling. The Maroons tied up the match in second doubles, winning a close match with
Meckenzie Letellier (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) and
Katie Sarnowski (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee). The Lemon and Black clutched up in third doubles with
Emma Turner (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) and
Elizabeth Key (Moseley, Va./Cosby), as they closed out doubles with a dominant 8-3 win.
Roanoke did not quit and managed to tie up the game after third singles by a score of 3-3. Randolph-Macon needed to win at least two out of the final three singles matches to take home the victory. The Yellow Jackets ended the match defeating the Maroons in all three singles matches, with
Matty Grace Gilliam (Murfreesboro, N.C./Ridgecroft) and Sarnowski winning very close games for two more points.
Becky Villeda (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) put the bow on the match with a win in sixth singles 6-2,6-0
