(ASHLAND, Va.) – The Randolph-Macon women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season as it took on nationally ranked Washington & Lee on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets battled early in doubles action before the No. 9 Generals pulled away.

How It Happened
- Avery Smith (Sr., Walpole, Mass. / Walpole) and Grace Holderman (Jr., Roanoke, Va. / Cave Spring) paired at first doubles to take on W&L's Becket Waters and Izzy Koziol to start the day. They were able to split the first few games and trailed 3-2 early before the Generals duo pulled away for an 8-3 victory.
- Gabby Cifuentes (Sr., Stafford, Va. / Paul VI) and Rachael Johnston (Sr., Roanoke, Va. / Hidden Valley) also were able to win a couple games at third doubles, but eventually fell 8-2 to the team of Gracie Caplice and Meagan Donovan.
- Matty Grace Gilliam (So., Murfreesboro, N.C. / Ridgecroft) and Adele Huffman (So., Granite Falls, N.C. / University Christian) were paired together at thirds and were also able to take a game from the Generals squad of Kaitlyn Chalker and Nell Covington.
- Once singles play began, Washington & Lee was able to extend its lead with a shutout in sixth singles. Cifuentes was able to take a game in the second set at fourth singles before Chalker provided the fifth team point to secure the team win for the Generals.
- Johnston and Holderman were able to take a game in the first sets of their singles matches at second and fifth, respectively.
Inside The Numbers
- The Yellow Jackets are the first team to score any games against the Generals in three ODAC matches this semester.
