How It Happened
- Junior Logan Schweiger (Church Hill, Md./Queen Anne's County) tallied the first goal of the game for the Yellow Jackets on a free position shot one minute in. After the Captains tied it, sophomore Sarah Lynch (Fallston, Md./Friends School of Baltimore) broke the tie on an assist by sophomore Annie Bartley (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) as R-MC went up 2-1 with nine minutes left in the first period. CNU scored five straight goals to take a 6-2 advantage after one quarter.
- The Captains tallied the first two scores of the second period to take an 8-2 lead. Senior McKenzie Hynson (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) netted a goal and assisted on a score by Schweiger before senior Lily Henderson (Manakin-Sabot, Va./St. Catherine's) and Kaleigh Mulligan converted free position shots as the Yellow Jackets pulled within two at 8-6 with five minutes remaining. CNU scored twice before Lowery recorded a goal to make it 10-7 with 1:38 left. The Captains added a goal before Schweiger scored on a free position shot with 12 seconds remaining as R-MC trailed 11-8 at intermission.
- Lowery scored on an assist by Bartley three minutes into the third quarter to make it 11-9. After a CNU goal, Bartley scored on a free position shot as the Captains led 12-10 with 11 minutes left. Freshman Taylor Mittelstadter (Chesterfield, Va./Manchester) had a goal to answer a CNU score as the score stood 13-11 midway through the period. Hynson assisted on a goal by Lowery as R-MC pulled within one at 13-12 with seven minutes remaining. After a Captain goal, Lowery answered to make it 14-13 with four minutes left. CNU collected the next two scores before Lowery netted a player-down goal with 19 seconds left as the Captains led 16-14 heading to the final period.
- CNU had the first goal of the fourth quarter before Henderson answered with 9:40 remaining to make it 17-15. The Captains added a goal with 5:14 left and another a minute later to lead by four at 19-15. Lowery scored on an assist by senior Italia Carnazza (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI) with 1:15 remaining to make the final 19-16.
