Bartley Scores In Bunches In Women's Lacrosse Win Over Angels

Box Score

(ASHLAND, Va.) – Annie Bartley (So., Richmond, Va. / Mills Godwin) scored with 18 seconds left in overtime send the Randolph-Macon women's lacrosse team into a frenzy after an incredible comeback win over Meredith on Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets trailed the Avenging Angels by three with just over seven minutes remaining, but rallied to tie the game with a minute left.

While March Madness is typically used for basketball this time of year, there was plenty of the recipe in Saturday's game with buzzer-beating shots, big play personas, and clutch scoring. Fortunately for the Lemon and Black, they were the ones celebrating at the end.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 15, Meredith 14

Venue: Nunnally Field

Records: Randolph-Macon 3-3, Meredith 3-3

How It Happened

  • Lily Henderson (Sr., Manakin-Sabot, Va. / St. Catherine's) opened the scoring by securing the draw control and racing down the field to score in 16 seconds for a fast start. Meredith was able to respond, however, with the next four goals that stretched most of the first quarter.
  • As the cliché goes, it's not how you start, it's how you finish, and the Jackets finished in style. Bartley started her remarkable day with two goals to end the first spaced 17 seconds apart. The final score game at the buzzer and gave the Lemon and Black a much needed momentum lift as they went into the second down 4-3.
  • Meredith opened the scoring in the second before three consecutive goals gave the Yellow Jackets the lead once again at 6-5. Again it was Bartley providing the heroics as she found the back of the net as the Jackets were on an EWO chance. The Angels were able to answer though and went into halftime equal at six-all.
  • The Jackets scored two of the first three goals in the third which both took place during penalties. McKenzie Hynson (Sr., Pasadena, Md. / Northeast) added another woman-up score, but the second took place during a R-MC card. It was no bother for Rianna Lowery (Fr., Bel Air, Md. / Notre Dame Prep) who took the dish from Hynson and scored for an 8-7 lead midway through the frame.
  • Meredith scored the next two, but the Jackets closed the quarter with three of the last four for a one goal lead headed to the fourth. Meredith started the quarter with the first four goals and had the momentum thanks to a 14-11 lead with 7:18 to play. Hynson was able to get the Jackets back on track before another Bartley goal put the Jackets within one. Henderson's final score tied the game up at 14 with 1:07 to play.
  • In OT, both teams had chances to start, but both defenses game up big. With time ticking down in the first OT period, Bartley drove in and fired one past the keeper to spark a mad rush in the south zone.

Inside The Numbers

  • Bartley finished with a game-high six goals matching her season best set in the season opener against Methodist exactly a month prior.
  • Caraline Cypher (Sr., Havre de Grace, Md. / Havre de Grace) recorded the win and made 10 saves on 29 shots faced.
  • Shots were fairly even as one might expect in this time of game with Meredith holding a slight edge 29-28.
  • It's the first overtime game for the Yellow Jackets since 2018 when they dropped a 14-13 game to Washington.
  • The last OT win for the Jackets was on March 17, 2015, when they defeated Farmingdale State 15-14 in quadruple overtime.
  • Italia Carnazza (Sr., Fairfax, Va. / Paul VI) caused three turnovers and picked up a pair of ground balls to lead the defense. Katie Sheehan (Sr., Gambrills Md. / Archbishop Spalding) also had a big day with two caused turnovers and four ground balls.

Up Next

Christopher Newport awaits the Jackets who will head to the shore on Wednesday. Opening draw is set for 7 p.m.
