Men's Soccer Explodes In Second Half For Shutout

Box Score

(EMORY, Va.)Ruben Niamien (Sr., Fredericksburg, Va. / Chancellor) and Connor Lorenz (Jr., Bel Air, Md. / Bel Air) led a second half explosion by the Randolph-Macon men's soccer team en route to a 5-0 shutout at Emory & Henry on Sunday afternoon. The duo scored two goals each as R-MC scored all five goals in the second half.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 5, Emory & Henry 0

Location/Venue: Fred Selfe Stadium, Emory, Va.

Records: Randolph-Macon (2-1, 1-1 ODAC), Emory & Henry (0-3, 0-3 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • After a defensive first half by both teams, Lorenz eventually lit up the scoreboard in the 63rd minute after a failed clear by the Wasps set him up 25 yards out. A swift kick deflected off a Wasps defender, but was still able to sneak just inside the left post past the outstretched arms of the E&H keeper.
  • Just over a couple of minutes later, Chazz Jones (Fr., Trenton, N.J. / Trenton Catholic) won a short goal kick and found Austin Fattizzi (So., Virginia Beach, Va. / Norfolk Collegiate) breaking up the middle. The feed left Fattizzi with a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper who was still deep from the goal kick, and slipped it by him to open the flood gates.
  • A set piece helped the Jackets on the third goal which came in the 74th minute as Lorenz picked up his second goal. The Jackets were awarded a corner, and while the goal didn't come directly off of it as both their goals Thursday, they did control possession the entire time and eventually centered back towards the right post. Colton Howell (Jr., Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) served Lorenz who had a wide open shot on the left side to make it 3-0.
  • Fattizzi wasn't done as goal No. 4 was set up by him on the right side in the 85th minute. He had two players breaking down the middle and promptly served them, but it was Niamien that was able to flick it just inside the right post from 10 yards out.
  • Niamien put the cherry on top in the final minute with a beautiful play that saw him beat a defender by the right corner flag and dribble to the middle of the box and score to the lower right 90.

Inside The Numbers

  • The Jackets dominated possession of the ball and it showed in the shots and corner kicks. R-MC outshot the Wasps 21-4 in the game, including 12-1 in the explosive second half. Corners favored the visitors 7-2.
  • Anthony Ivanov (So., North Brunswick, N.J. / Immaculata) and Mike Deal (Sr., Cinnaminson, N.J. / Cinnaminson) combined to give the defense its second clean sheet in three games to start the season. Only Ivanov was called on to make any stops as both of the hosts' shots on goal came in the first half.
  • The Jackets now have four shutouts in their last eight games dating back to the 2019 season.
