How It Happened
- Randolph-Macon applied offensive pressure early in the match. While Averett attempted to push out of their defensive half, strong performances from defenders Damien Jackson (Newport News, Va./Menchville), Grant Counts (Odenton, Md./St. Mary's [Annapolis]), Kevin Sprince (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) and Wiley Eubank (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) prevented the Cougars from building any meaningful attack.
- The Yellow Jackets created more chances late in the first half, with opportunities from Elijah Caro (Asheville, N.C./Black Mountain) and Ian Edwards (Stafford, Va./North Stafford), but the teams went into halftime tied 0-0.
- Randolph-Macon continued its offensive push early in the second half. In the 64th minute, Alvaro Alvarez del Rio was called for a foul, giving the Yellow Jackets a chance to break the deadlock on a penalty kick. However, Averett goalkeeper Anibal Lopez made the save to keep the score level.
- In the final five minutes, Randolph-Macon made a strong push to find a game-winner, but the Cougar defense held firm, and the match ended in a scoreless draw.
