Riley Scores Two Straight To Give Women's Lacrosse Senior Day Win

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. – On Senior Day, it was only fitting that the Women's Lacrosse seniors came up with half of Randolph-Macon's ten goals. But none as important as the two scored by senior Saunders Riley (Summerfield, N.C. / Northern Guilford) with under ten minutes to play in a tight game. Riley took a pass from junior Mary Castle (Annapolis, Md. / Annapolis) along the left side of goal and worked across the front of it, spinning around a Hornet defender and slotted it into the upper right corner of the net, tying the game at 9-9. Riley then was responsible for giving the team the lead and the victory with a goal on a free position attempt.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 10, Shenandoah 9

Location/Venue: Ashland, Va./Day Field

Records: Randolph-Macon (11-6, 8-1 ODAC), Shenandoah (11-6, 6-3 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • Randolph-Macon came out on fire. Senior Rachel Jones (Chestertown, Md. / Kent County) scored the first goal of the game for R-MC and was quickly followed by sophomore Kaylyn Hewes (Linthicum, Md. / North County), putting the Yellow Jackets ahead 2-1.
  • Shenandoah got one of the goals back, but R-MC kept the pressure on as senior Hannah Jones scored with 11:15 o go in the first half. SU scored again, but R-MC got goals from Castle and sophomore Bella Samper (Spring, Texas / Klein Oak) to give R-MC the 5-2 lead at the half. Rachel Jones got the assist for Samper's goal.
  • Castle scored to pick the second half right where R-MC left the first off with a goal just 47 seconds into the frame. But Shenandoah scored three straight to cut the Yellow Jacket lead to just one. Sophomore Natalie Webster (Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian) scored to give R-MC a bit of breathing room, but SU was able to rip off another three in a row to take it's first lead of the game with 13:13 to play.
  • Hannah Jones did her best to not make it comfortable for SU for long. On the draw control following SU's third goal of the series, she took the draw control and ran straight to the cage, putting it in to tie the game at 8-8.
  • Shenandoah got the lead back about two minutes later after Kaitlyn Morris scored to give the Hornets the 9-8 lead.
  • But Riley took the game in her hands, scoring the two goals to ensure R-MC's win at 10-9 in an exciting finish, which included the game-winning goal in a player-down situation.

Inside The Numbers

  • Seniors were present in the defensive zone as well.  Seniors Lexi Jones (Chestertown, Md. / Kent County), Abby Roth (Bayville, N.J. / Donovan Catholic) and Olivia Mott (Dayton, Md. / River Hill) each earned one caused turnover. Rachel Jones, Hannah Jones and junior Olivia Cheezum (Centreville, Md. / Queen Anne's County) each had one as well. Castle paced the team with four caused turnovers.
  • Hewes led the team with four ground balls. Nine different Yellow Jackets recorded at least one ground ball.
  • Hewes also commanded six draw controls. Hannah Jones added two. R-MC won 14 compared to SU's six.
  • Junior Elicia Wells (Richmond, Va. / Trinity) recorded five saves, included the 300th of her career.
  • R-MC converted four of five free position opportunities today.
  • The Yellow Jackets attempted 32 shots today compared to 22 for Shenandoah.
