Women's Tennis Turn Marlins Back

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Randolph-Macon Women's Tennis scored a dominating victory against the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins Tuesday afternoon as the Yellow Jackets swept doubles action and took five of six singles matches to turn back the Marlins.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 8, Virginia Wesleyan 1

Location/Venue: Virginia Beach, Va./Everett Tennis Center

Records: Randolph-Macon (6-0, 3-0 ODAC), Virginia Wesleyan (7-5, 3-3 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • Juniors Landon Aud (Fishersville, Va. / Wilson Memorial) and Kristin Dantzler (Williamsburg, Va. / York) completed their match against Lyric Hinton and Christine Zalameda at No. 2 Doubles, winning 8-2.
  • At No. 3 Doubles, junior Courtney Jenkins (Yorktown, Va. / York) and sophomore Isabel Wadsworth (Lake Wales, Fla. / Lake Wales) defeated Taitum O'Brien and Aubree Johnson 8-2, finishing second.
  • The No. 1 Doubles tandem of senior Stephanie Yeager (Fairfax, Va. / Robinson Secondary) and junior Morgan Fuqua (Richmond, VA / Mills Godwin) found themselves locked in a tough battle with Audrey Bally and Katie Staman. But the Yellow Jacket combo pulled ahead 8-6, and pushed R-MC into the driver's seat for the rest of the match.
  • From there, R-MC won up and down the singles lineup, though Dantzler was forced to retire while ahead in the second set at No. 2 Singles, giving VWU its lone victory of the afternoon.
  • At No. 1 Singles, Fuqua got a win against Zalameda 6-1, 6-2.
  • Yeager flipped Fuqua's score at No. 3 Singles, winning against Staman 6-2, 6-1.
  • Aud faced Hinton at No. 4 Singles, where she took a 6-0, 6-3 win.
  • No. 5 Singles was also a flip from the slot just before – as Wadsworth beat O'Brien 6-3, 6-0.
  • Jenkins rounded out the order with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Stegemann.
