Women's Tennis Closes Season With Win At Hollins

HOLLINS, Va. – Randolph-Macon women's tennis closed the 2018 campaign with a 6-3 victory at Hollins on Sunday afternoon. R-MC has secured the second seed in the upcoming Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament, finishing the season 12-3 overall and 10-1 in the ODAC.

 R-MC's #1 and #2 doubles pairs both won in the first matches of the afternoon. Senior Sarah Hinson (Nashville, N.C. / Northern Nash) and sophomore Landon Aud (Fishersville, Va. / Wilson Memorial) played #1 doubles for the first time this season, winning 8-3 against Hollins' Kate Woodruff and Valerie Sargeant. Sophomore Courtney Jenkins (Yorktown, Va. / York) and freshman Daniella Hafner (Leesburg, Va. / Loudoun County) were paired together as the #2 doubles team, playing in their first career doubles match. They were successful over Hollins' Amelia Verkerk and Sarah Jordan Snoddy, winning 8-4.

Hollins got its first victory of the afternoon in #3 doubles. Kateri Johnson and Olivia Dannon defeated junior Abigail Williams (Palmyra, Va. / Fluvanna County) and sophomore Lyric Hinton (Henrico, Va. / Monacan) 9-7.

In singles, much of the R-MC lineup got victories. Aud, playing #1 singles for the first time in her career, won against Kate Woodruff 6-2, 6-3. Aud finished the season 11-3 in singles.

Hollins got wins at #2 and #3 singles. Verkerk defeated Hinson 6-1, 6-4 while Johnson defeated junior Tory Stribling (Troy, Va. / Fluvanna County). Stribling did force a third set after winning the second set 6-3, though Johnson won set one 7-5 and set three in the ten-point tiebreaker 10-5.

But R-MC picked up the wins back at the bottom of the lineup. #4 singles competition, freshman Isabel Wadsworth (Lake Wales, Fla. / Lake Wales) defeated Snoddy 6-4, 6-0. Wadsworth finishes the season 3-1 this season.

#5 singles player, sophomore Macy Lee Johnson (Henderson, N.C. / Kerr-Vance Academy), defeated HU's Olivia Dannon 6-2, 6-3. It marked Johnson's second win of the season and third of her career.

Finally, freshman Andrea Wine (King George, Va. / King George) had one of the most decisisve victories of the day, defeating Liz Rochow 6-0, 6-1. It marked Wine's first career singles victory. She secured her first doubles victory earlier in the year against St. Mary's (Md.).

Randolph-Macon will play a home match in the ODAC Quarterfinals next Tuesday, May 1. Further details on start time and opponent will be announced later tonight.
