Women's Tennis Snags Important Conference Win

ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon women's tennis snagged an important conference victory over Roanoke 5-4 Saturday afternoon at the Banks Tennis Center in Ashland, Va. Juniors Gaby Tersigni (Yorktown, Va. / York) and Stephanie Yeager (Fairfax, Va. / Robinson Secondary) and sophomore Kristin Dantzler (Williamsburg, Va. / York) did not lose on the afternoon to ensure R-MC got the victory, moving to 9-3 overall and 7-1 in the conference while Roanoke fell to 12-5 overall and 7-4 in the conference.

In the doubles competition, Tersigni and Dantzler partnered up to defeat Roanoke's Jessica Kennedy and Avery Smith 8-6. The duo is now 2-1 since being teamed up as the #1 doubles pair.

#2 doubles pair, Yeager and freshman Olivia Uzer (McLean, Va. / Langley), found similar success, defeating Catherine Lee and Madeline Herring 8-5. Yeager and Uzer are 3-0 since being paired up.

#3 doubles pair of senior Sarah Hinson (Nashville, N.C. / Northern Nash) and sophomore Landon Aud (Fishersville, Va. / Wilson Memorial) were not able to overcome Roanoke's Janny Alvarado and Carolyn Kitsock, losing 8-6. Overall the pair is 6-2 this season, all from the #3 doubles spot.

In the singles competition, R-MC was able to win the first three matches, gaining the team the overall win for the day.  

Tersigni, R-MC's #1 singles player, defeated Kennedy 6-0, 6-2 to put R-MC closer to the match victory. Tersigni is now 8-4 on the season in singles, all from the #1 spot.

Yeager also secured a victory in #2 singles 6-1, 6-4. Yeager raised her season record to 4-7 on the season, all from #2 singles.

Dantzler closed the match out for R-MC with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Smith. Dantzler is now 9-3 on the season, including 8-3 from #3 singles.

Roanoke's bottom half of the singles lineup took some wind out of R-MC's sails though. Uzer and Aud lost just their third matches in singles this season, while Hinson lost just her first singles match of 2018. All still have winning records in #4, #5 and #6 singles respectively.

Herring defeated Uzer 6-3. 4-6 and 1-0 (10-3) while Kitsock got the better of Aud 7-6 (7-5), 3-6 and 1-0 (10-7). Hinson had a tough battle in the first set as well before losing 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

Randolph-Macon is back in action Tuesday against Lynchburg at 2:00 at the Banks Tennis Center.
