Lightfoot Delivers Six Assists as R-MC Women's Lacrosse Tops VWU 18-6

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Alex Lightfoot (Fairfax, Va./WT Woodson) dished out six assists and is one away from the program's career mark as the Randolph-Macon women's lacrosse team defeated Virginia Wesleyan 18-6 Wednesday evening on Day Field for Senior Night.

The Yellow Jackets (8-6, 5-1 ODAC) extended their win streak to five, while the Marlins (7-5, 1-4 ODAC) have dropped three straight.

Lightfoot leads the ODAC with 35 assists. She had 162 career assists, one behind Angela Bisland (1999-02).

The Yellow Jackets tallied the first five goals of the match, with two by senior Frankie Willing (Salisbury, Md./Worcester) and single scores by freshman Bella Samper (Spring, Texas/Klein Oak), freshman Kaylyn Hewes (Linthicum, Md./North County) and junior Lexi Jones (Chestertown, Md./Kent County). VWU scored with 17:27 left in the first period before R-MC put up the final eight goals of the half. Jones had three, senior Alicia Hsieh (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) netted two, and sophomores Mary Castle (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis, Julia Bain (Nokesville, Va./Patriot) and Jordan Dudley (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) added single goals to make it 13-1 at the break. R-MC was 5 for 6 on free position shots in the first half.

R-MC maintained a double-digit lead in the second half. Willing and Hsieh both added their third goals, junior Saunders Riley (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) tallied two and freshman Erin Mattone (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) netted the final goal as the game ended 18-6. Lightfoot had four of her six assists in the second half.

The Yellow Jackets held a 14-11 advantage on draw controls. Hsieh and junior Hannah Jones (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) both grabbed five.

R-MC had a 14-10 edge on ground balls. Senior Sarah Alvanos (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) paced the Yellow Jackets with three.

Alvanos and Hsieh both recorded a pair of caused turnovers.

Sophomore Elicia Wells (Richmond, Va./Trinity) recorded a pair of saves in the first half, while sophomore Katie Thompson (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) picked up two saves in the second stanza.

Randolph-Macon will travel to Lynchburg on Saturday for a key 7 p.m. ODAC contest.
