Jones Scores Six for R-MC Women's Lacrosse at CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Junior Lexi Jones (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) scored a career-high six goals as the Randolph-Macon women's lacrosse team dropped a 21-16 decision at Christopher Newport on Wednesday evening.

The Yellow Jackets moved to 3-5 on the season, while the Captains leveled their mark at 5-5.

CNU tallied the first two goals of the game before senior Alicia Hsieh (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) scored to take it 2-1 with 26:26 left in the first half. The Captains got the next six goals before sophomore Mary Castle (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) snapped the string with 13:12 left. CNU put up four more goals to take a 12-2 advantage before Jones scored four straight goals in 2:30 to make it 12-6 with just over one minute left in the half. The Captains scored with 30 seconds remaining to take a 13-6 lead at intermission.

The Captains had the first two goals of the second half to go up 15-6. The Yellow Jackets would net the next four goals, as Castle and junior Hannah Jones (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) had single scores and junior Saunders Riley (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) scored twice to make it 15-10 with 18 minutes remaining. After CNU added three goals, Lexi Jones and senior Sarah Alvanos (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) scored for the visitors as the Captains led 18-12 with 12:43 left. CNU put up another goal before Hannah Jones and Lexi Jones netted scores to make it 19-14 with 8:37 remaining. The teams alternated goals over the final three minutes, as freshman Kaylyn Hewes (Linthicum, Md./North County) and sophomore Julia Bain (Nokesville, Va./Patriot) had the final goals for R-MC in the 21-16 contest.

R-MC held a 38-34 advantage in shots. Lexi Jones led the Yellow Jackets with seven shots, all on goal.

The Yellow Jackets had a 20-19 edge in draw controls. Hsieh paced R-MC with six, while Hewes and Hannah Jones both had five. Hewes led the Yellow Jackets with four ground balls.

Sophomore Katie Thompson (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) recorded 10 saves for the Yellow Jackets.

Randolph-Macon begins ODAC play on Saturday, March 31 with a 1 p.m. home game against Washington and Lee on Day Field.
