Yellow Jacket Pitchers Throw Pair Of No Hitters

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ASHLAND, Va. – Three Yellow Jacket Pitchers combined for 21 strikeouts and did not give up a single base hit in a pair of games against Norwich Sunday afternoon at the R-MC Softball Field. No. 12 R-MC bettered its record to 17-1 while Norwich fell to 0-4.

In addition to the stellar pitching, R-MC had five batters with multiple RBIs across the two games.

Randolph-Macon 10, Norwich 0 (5 Innings)

In the first game of the afternoon, pitching was key over the first two innings as junior Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va. / Patrick Henry) struck out the side in the second inning and four of the next six batters she faced. In total, she fanned eight and did not allow a single hit and only a single baserunner.

Junior Shelby Hill (Mechanicsville, Va. / St. Margaret's) kicked off the scoring for either team as she launched a homer over the left center fence. It marked the third home run of her career.

R-MC continued the offensive run in its half of the fourth. Freshman Kaitlyn Deeter (Roanoke, Va. / Lord Botetourt) singled as the first batter of the inning. She stole second before she was hit home by junior Brittany LaPrade (Quinton, Va. / New Kent), who doubled into left center. The next batter, sophomore Taylor Sanderford (Mechanicsville, Va. / Atlee) singled, advancing LaPrade to third before Sanderford then stole second. With two more runners in scoring position, sophomore Maddie Stone (Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) singled up the middle and moved to second on an error, while also scoring Sanderford and LaPrade. Hill sacrificed to move Stone to third.

After a Norwich pitching change and a walk issued to R-MC off the new arm, reigning ODAC Player of the Week, junior Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va. / Essex) sacrifice flied out to right field, scoring Stone and moving the beneficiary of the walk, junior Casey Abernethy (Prince George, Va. / Prince George) to third.

Sophomore Sami Davidson (Stafford, Va. / Brooke Point) kept the run going for Randolph-Macon, sending a pitch back up the middle, scoring Abernethy. Lone senior Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va. / Brunswick) singled as well, putting two runners on for the first batter of the inning, Deeter, to return to the plate.

Deeter reached base again, this time on an error, scoring Davidson. LaPrade doubled on her return trip, scoring Jones. Sanderford doubled to left center to close out the R-MC scoring for the fourth inning as LaPrade and Deeter came around.

Whittemore secured three ground outs to end the game. It marked her first career no-hitter and a complete game for the junior as well.

LaPrade, Sanderford and Davidson were all 2-3 in the game. LaPrade, Sanderford and Stone all registered two RBIs while Wood, Davidson and Hill each registered one.

Randolph-Macon 8, Norwich 0 (5 Innings)

Freshman Madie Rhoads (Portsmouth, Va. / Nansemond River) started the second game, getting two of the first three batters to strike out.

The home half of the inning saw a walk issued to Deeter before freshman Lauren Richardson (Stafford, Va. / North Stafford) sent a pitch over the left field wall, scoring herself and Deeter to leave the inning with a 2-0 lead.

Rhoads struck out the Norwich side in the second, giving R-MC the opportunity for more offense in the bottom half of the inning. Abernethy was issued a walk and stole second putting her in scoring position for freshman Megan Smith (Lexington, Va. / Rockbridge County). Smith singled to right, adding another baserunner for R-MC and pushing Abernethy to third. Junior Sarah Cimring (Chesapeake, Va. / Great Bridge) scored an RBI single on the next at-bat, sending Abernethy home. Whittemore, playing as the designated player in the second game, sent a single to second, scoring Cimring and Smith and putting R-MC up 5-0.

After a quiet third on both sides, R-MC sent freshman Kayley Scott (Henrico, Va. / Lee-Davis) into the circle for the final two innings. Scott struck out the side in the fourth inning and set up a strong offensive run in the bottom of the fourth.

After the first out of the inning, Whittemore singled on a bunt. Freshman Ashley Ramsey (Mechanicsville, Md. / St. Mary's Ryken) singled, giving R-MC another baserunner. Sophomore Chelsea Land (Danville, Va. / Chatham) walked to load the bases full. Richardson singled to score Whittemore and put R-MC up 6-0. Freshman Kamryn Steinruck (Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) walked with the bases loaded, scoring Ramsey and Abernethy did the same two batters later to bring home Richardson.

Scott completed the game with three strikeouts to complete the 8-0 win.

Scott and Rhoads combined for 13 strikeouts in 15 Norwich at-bats and the two did not issue a walk all game.

Whittemore went 3-3 with two RBIs while Richardson went 2-2 with two runs scored and three RBIs.

Randolph-Macon next faces Methodist on Tuesday at 3:00 PM.
