Softball Completes Regular Season With Dominant Sweep Over Randolph


LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Randolph-Macon softball team finished the regular season with a dominant sweep over Randolph on Saturday afternoon. 

The Basics:

How it Happened

Game 1:
  • Randolph-Macon started the scoring party in the first inning, as Charlotte Boswell (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) singled and scored on an Ashley Bush (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) double. Katerina Brabson (Chesapeake Beach, Md./Northern) doubled home Bush in the next at-bat. Mya Davis (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) hit an infield single to allow Brabson to cross home, giving the Yellow Jackets a 3-0 lead. Davis ended the first inning scoring by crossing home on a wild pitch and shot the Lemon and Black in front 4-0. 
  • In the second inning, Reagan Hill (Hanover, Va./Hanover) and Jordan Brown (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) both singled and Tori Powell (Freeman, Va./Mecklenberg County) reached on a fielders choice by Randolph, as Hill would be out at third. Boswell reached on a fielding error by the WildCats to load up the bases and a Bush walk allowed Brown to touch home.
  • Kailey Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va./Colonial) retired 11 of the first 12 batters she faced, only giving up a hit by pitch to Haili Gonzalez to begin the game. The sophomore gave up the first hit by Randolph in the fourth inning, but managed to keep the WildCats off the board and keeping RMC ahead 5-0. 
  • Randolph-Macon had Bailey Talley (Craigsville, Va./Buffalo Gap) on first and Jacy Ramos (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) on third with two outs. Talley stole second drawing a throw and Ramos broke for home and score to push RMC to a 6-0 lead. 
  • In the sixth inning, Brown led of the inning with a walk and Avery Shifflett (Ruckersville, Va./William Monroe) singled to put the first two runners on base in the inning. Boswell hit a sacrifice bunt to move Brown and Shifflett into scoring position with one out. Bush hit a sacrifice flyout to let Brown score from third and give RMC a 7-0 lead. Ramos kept the inning going with a single into left field to score Shifflett, pushing the Yellow Jackets into an 8-0 lead.
  • The WildCats started to swing the bats in the sixth inning, as Rachel Arce singled and Rylee Humble doubled to put both runners into scoring position. Brianne Slape pinch ran for Arce and with two outs, Michaela Williams doubled to plate Slape and Humble. Randolph-Macon still would be ahead 8-2, heading into the final inning.  
  • In the seventh inning, Powell added a run for the Yellow Jackets with a single to bring Ellie Herndon (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) home. Boswell kept the two out rally going with a double to plate Ripley Barry (Buchanan, Va./James River) from second base. 
By the Numbers
  • Jackson started the game for the Yellow Jackets, tossing six innings and gave up two runs on five hits and struck out two batters. Courtney Guthrie (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) pitched the final inning and finished a clean slate. 
  • Bush doubled and ended the game with a team high three RBIs. 
  • Brabson, Ramos and Davis, Powell and Boswell all finished the game with an RBI. 
How it Happened

Game 2:
  • Randolph-Macon started to put pressure on the bases in the top of the fourth inning in the second game. Davis got on base with an infield single to start the pressure against the WildCats. Hill drew a two out walk and Riley Koscinski (Chesterfield, Va./Manchester) got on base on a fielders choice and an error by Randolph allowed Davis to score and gave the Lemon and Black a 1-0 lead. 
  • In the bottom of the fifth inning, the WildCats had potential to tie and even take the lead against Randolph-Macon. Amanda Lawhorn drew a leadoff walk and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Victoria Porretta. Gonzalez singled to move Lawhorn to third and put runners on the corners and one out. Sierra Kegley (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) was able to produce a infield pop out by Paige Scruggs to need only one out to get out of the inning. Arce grounded out to second base and Kegley managed to hold RMC in front with a 1-0 score. 
  • The Yellow Jackets got Boswell to double and Alyssa Meharg (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) to single to begin the top of the seventh inning. Meharg stole second to put two runners into scoring position for Randolph-Macon. Brabson allowed Boswell to score on a sacrifice flyout and Davis reached on a Randolph error to let Meharg cross home. The two insurance runs in the final inning gave RMC a 3-0 lead with three outs to get. 
  • Kegley sat down the WildCats in the bottom half of the seventh, securing the 3-0 win an the sweep for Randolph-Macon. 
By the Numbers
  • Kegley started the game for the Lemon and Black, tossing seven shutout innings, only giving up four hits and struck out five. 
  • Brabson recorded the lone RBI for the Yellow Jackets.
  • Boswell ended the game going 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
For the Record
  • Powell has walked 19 times this season, moving her into the tenth spot with Laura Bauer (2010) and Brandi Mulvena (2016) in a single season. 
  • Kegley pitched her eighth shutout of the year, moving into a tie for fourth all-time for shutouts in a single season. The last Yellow Jacket pitcher to have eight shutouts in a season was Gracie Ellis '25 in 2024.
