ASHLAND, Va.—The second-seeded Randolph-Macon women's tennis team defeated No. 7 Guilford 5-0 Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the 2016 ODAC Tennis Tournament to advance to the semifinals for the third consecutive season.
The Yellow Jackets (16-1) held a 3-0 advantage after doubles play to only require winning two of six singles matches to advance.
Each doubles match was claimed via a score of 8-1. Junior Caitlin Delmas (Asheville, NC / K-12 International Academy) paired with sophomore Sid Corrigan (South Bend, Ind. / Saint Joseph's) at No. 1 Doubles to grab the first win for R-MC. Junior Kelsie Grice (Hoover, Ala. / Charlotte Country Day) and freshman Gaby Tersigni (Yorktown, Va. / York) claimed the second win for the Yellow Jackets. Juniors Melissa Tomlin (Prince George, Va. / Prince George) and Molly Jesseman (Williamsburg, Va. / Warhill) added the last doubles win.
In singles competition, Delmas claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 to put the Yellow Jackets ahead 4-0. Junior Toni McDonald (Richmond, Va. / Varina) clinched the match for R-MC with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 5 Singles.
Randolph-Macon will play No. 3 Roanoke in the semifinals on Saturday, May 7 at Washington & Lee. The start time will be determined soon. The Maroons posted a 5-1 victory over Bridgewater today. The Yellow Jackets defeated Roanoke 9-0 in the regular season.
