Box Score SALEM, Va. - Freshman Diane McDaniel (Fauquier, Va./Liberty) had two hits and scored twice as Randolph-Macon was eliminated by Lynchburg 7-5 in 10 innings at the ODAC Softball Tournament Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets moved to 31-13, while the Hornets improved to 27-17.
After LC put up two in the top of the first, R-MC answered in the bottom of the frame. McDaniel had a leadoff single and was sacrificed to second by sophomore Brandi Mulvena (Farnham, Va./Rappahannock). Senior Madison Gilman (Glen Allen, Va./Patrick Henry) had a base hit to right, moving McDaniel to third. Freshman Cori Spartana (Baltimore, Md./St. Timothy's) was a pinch-runner for Gilman at first and stole second. McDaniel scored on a wild pitch and senior Sierra Ford (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) singled to drive in Spartana as R-MC tied the game at 2-2.
The game was scoreless over the next six frames, forcing extra innings. After the Hornets scored in the top of the eighth, Gilman delivered a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame to make it 3-3.
LC added a run in the ninth before junior Jen Balcom (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) had a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to extend the game one more time.
The Hornets put three runs on the board in the top of the 10th before R-MC rallied in the bottom of the 10th. With freshman Casey Abernethy (Prince George, Va./Prince George) on second, freshman Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) singled to move Abernethy to third. McDaniel had an RBI single to drive in Abernethy, making the score 7-5. The Yellow Jackets loaded the bases, but could not tie the game as LC claimed the 7-5 victory.
Gilman, Ford and Whittemore each had two hits for R-MC.
