Box Score 2 ASHLAND, Va.—Senior Madison Gilman (Glen Allen, Va. / Patrick Henry) recorded four hits with two homers and four RBIs on the day as the Randolph-Macon softball team split with Lynchburg on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (29-11, 12-6 ODAC) came from behind in Game 1 to win 8-5 and dropped the nightcap 9-4 to the Hornets (24-16, 12-6 ODAC).
The Hornets scored two runs in the top of the first in Game 1 and held R-MC without a hit through the first two innings as they took a 3-0 lead into the fourth. Gilman led off the bottom of the fourth with a single to right field. Senior Sierra Ford (Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan) reached on an error. Freshman Casey Abernethy (Prince George, Va. / Prince George) pinch ran for Gilman at second base. Junior Jen Balcom (Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan) walked to load the bases with one away. Sophomore Hayden Fontenot (Lexington, Va. / Rockbridge) singled to left field, scoring Abernethy. Ford scored on a wild pitch as the Yellow Jackets cut their deficit to one run at 3-2.
LC added a run in the top of the sixth to hold a 4-2 advantage before R-MC exploded in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va. / Brunswick) and Balcom singled before sophomore Skylar Toth (Midlothian, Va. / Clover Hill) walked to load the bases. Freshman Diane McDaniel (Fauquier, Va. / Liberty) doubled to left center, scoring all three runners to give the Yellow Jackets a 5-4 lead with one out. Freshman Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va. / Patrick Henry) reached on an error and McDaniel scored. With two away, Gilman hit a two-run homer as R-MC expanded its lead to 8-4 heading to the seventh.
The Hornets added one run in the top of the frame as the Yellow Jackets claimed the 8-5 win.
Sophomore Nelda Bagley (Kenbridge, Va. / Central) pitched 6.2 innings on the mound to improve to 13-6 on the season.
Jones went 2-3 in the nightcap with two singles while Gilman tallied her second homer as the Yellow Jackets fell 9-4.
Lynchburg scored six runs in the second to hold a 6-0 lead. R-MC added three in the bottom of the third to cut its deficit to three. Toth singled to right field and McDaniel was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Toth scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Brandi Mulvena (Farnham, Va. / Rappahannock). That's when Gilman homered to center field again to make the score 6-3.
The Hornets multiplied their lead with one run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth. R-MC added its remaining run in the bottom of the fourth. Jones hit a leadoff single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Balcom. She moved to third on a single from Fontenot and scored on a sacrifice fly by Toth.
Randolph-Macon has concluded the regular season at 29-11 and 12-6 in conference play. The Yellow Jackets are currently tied for third in the conference standings. Seeding information will be released on Sunday, April 24 in the evening after all teams have concluded the regular season.
