Russo Scores Four as R-MC Defeats Guilford on Senior Day

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va.—Senior Katie Russo (Cockeysville, Md. / Dulaney) tallied four goals on Senior Day as the Randolph-Macon women's lacrosse team defeated Guilford 17-10 Saturday afternoon to stay unbeaten in league play.

Sophomore Alicia Hsieh (Ellicott City, Md. / Centennial) tallied five goals and sophomore Alex Lightfoot (Fairfax, Va. / WT Woodson) dished out five assists.

The R-MC seniors accounted for seven of the team's 17 goals in the contest. Senior Alyssa Chavez (Frederick, Md. / Walkersville) scored twice and senior Shannon Jamieson (Cypress, Tx. / Cypress-Woods) also scored.

The Yellow Jackets (8-4, 5-0 ODAC) outscored the Quakers (6-7, 4-2 ODAC) 12-2 in the first half. Hsieh notched the first goal of the contest before Guilford tied the game at 1-1. The Yellow Jackets countered with six straight goals. Lightfoot grabbed her second assist by finding Hsieh to cap the 6-0 Yellow Jacket run to make it 7-1 with 10:26 remaining until halftime. The Quakers scored their second goal of the game at 7:49 but R-MC responded by tallying the last five goals of the first half with help from Chavez, Russo and Hsieh.

Lightfoot found Russo 28-seconds into the second half to put R-MC ahead 13-2. Guilford would score three times to pull within eight at 13-5 but R-MC answered with goals from Hsieh and junior Susie Snee (Bel Air, Md. / John Carroll) to again hold a ten-goal advantage. Guilford scored once more before Russo tallied her fourth goal of the game and freshman Hannah Jones (Chestertown, Md. / Kent County) also scored to make it 17-6 with 9:25 remaining. Guilford tallied the last four goals of the contest as R-MC claimed the 17-10 ODAC victory.

Senior defensive leadership helped R-MC fend off the Quakers. Senior Tricia Mangas (Chantilly, Va. / Paul VI Catholic) caused one turnover while Katie Schweitzer (Babylon, NY / Babylon) also caused a turnover and picked up three groundballs. Senior Natalie Schnell (Bowie, Md. / Elizabeth Seton) picked up two groundballs.

The Yellow Jackets held a 19-10 advantage on draw controls.

Junior Allie Walker (Towson, Md. / Mercy) recorded nine saves for R-MC.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Wednesday, April 20 at 4 p.m. on Day Field for an ODAC contest against Virginia Wesleyan.
