Box Score 2 SALEM, Va.—Sophomore Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va. / Brunswick) went 2 for 3 in the nightcap with a single and a home run, her second of the day, as the Randolph-Macon softball team split a doubleheader with Roanoke Sunday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (24-8, 7-3 ODAC) dropped Game 1 to the Maroons (15-17, 6-6 ODAC) in extra innings before claiming Game 2 by a score of 5-1.
Sophomore Nelda Bagley (Kenbridge, Va. / Central) went the distance in Game 2 with four hits, a walk and five strikeouts to raise her record to 10-5 on the season.
After a scoreless first frame, R-MC added two in the top of the second. Jones singled up the middle and advanced on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Hayden Fontenot (Lexington, Va. / Rockbridge). She moved to third on a ground out and scored on a bunt single from freshman Cori Spartana (Baltimore, Md. / St. Timothy's). With two away, Spartana stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball before reaching home plate on a fielding error to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets added to their lead in the third with homers from senior Madison Gilman (Glen Allen, Va. / Patrick Henry) and Jones to make it 4-0.
In the fourth, junior Jen Balcom (Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan) walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Spartana. Freshman Sarah Cimring (Chesapeake, Va. / Great Bridge) pinch ran for Balcom and scored on a throwing error to give R-MC a 5-0 advantage.
The Maroons added a run in the bottom of the sixth as the Yellow Jackets claimed the 5-1 ODAC victory.
A three-run homer from Jones was not enough in Game 1 as the Yellow Jackets fell 6-5 to the Maroons in extra innings.
The Yellow Jackets powered to a 3-0 lead in the first frame. Freshman Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va. / Patrick Henry) walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Brandi Mulvena (Farnham, Va. / Rappahannock). Gilman singled before Jones stepped up to knock one deep to put R-MC ahead by three.
R-MC added to its lead in the next inning. Balcom doubled down the left field line and scored on a single from Fontenot to make it 4-0 in favor of the visitors.
The Yellow Jackets held the Maroons without a run through five innings before Roanoke cut R-MC's lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. After a 1-2-3 top of seventh for the Yellow Jackets, the Maroons tied the game in the bottom of the frame to force extra innings.
Mulvena was placed on second to start the eighth. She was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Gilman and scored on a single from senior Sierra Ford (Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan). The Maroons responded with one run in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 5-5.
Roanoke tallied the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to take the 6-5 win.
Whittemore had seven strikeouts in seven innings on the mound for the Yellow Jackets.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Tuesday, April 12 at 3 p.m. for a doubleheader at Eastern Mennonite.
