Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.—Sophomore Hayden Fontenot (Lexington, Va. / Rockbridge) homered as the Randolph-Macon softball team claimed a 2-1 decision on Saturday afternoon against Rutgers-Camden at the Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast Tournament.
The Raptors (0-2) scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning before Fontenot added the home run in the fifth for the Yellow Jackets (5-3) to tie the score at 1-1.
R-MC broke the tie in the sixth. Senior Madison Gilman (Glen Allen, Va. / Patrick Henry) walked before sophomores Skylar Toth (Midlothian, Va. / Clover Hill) and Harley Jones (Broadnax, Va. / Brunswick) both singled to load the bases. Gilman scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly to center field from junior Jen Balcom (Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan).
Freshman pitcher Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va. / Patrick Henry) worked for 5.1 innings, tallying seven strikeouts. Sophomore Nelda Bagley (Kenbridge, Va. / Central) faced four batters in relief and notched one strikeout in 1.2 innings to earn the win.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Sunday, March 6 for two games. R-MC will face Keene St. at 10 a.m. and Salem at noon at the Princess Anne Athletic Complex.
