Box Score 2 ASHLAND, Va. – Freshman Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) and sophomore Nelda Bagley (Kennbridge, Va./Central) each allowed one unearned run as the Randolph-Macon softball team swept a doubleheader from Mary Washington Thursday afternoon at the R-MC Softball Field.
The Yellow Jackets (20-6) won each game by a 2-1 score, with the second going eight innings.
Whittemore (11-2) allowed four hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in the opener.
R-MC started the scoring in the second. Senior Sierra Ford (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) had a leadoff double to right center, moved to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a base hit by junior Jen Balcom (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) as the Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead.
After the Eagles (6-18) tied it with a run in the third, the Yellow Jackets reclaimed the lead in the fourth. Sophomore Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va./Brunswick) led off with a single, stole second, was sacrificed to third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Balcom to give R-MC a 2-1 edge.
Bagley (8-4) allowed just three hits in eight innings in Game 2 with two walks and six strikeouts.
The game was scoreless through seven. UMW pushed across an unearned run in the top of the eighth. With freshman Diane McDaniel (Fauquier, Va./Liberty) on second, sophomore Brandi Mulvena (Farnham, Va./Rappahannock) reached on a bunt single, moving McDaniel to third. Senior Madison Gilman (Glen Allen, Va./Patrick Henry) singled through the left side, driving in McDaniel with the tying run. Sophomore Skylar Toth (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) followed with a base hit to left to bring home Mulvena with the game-winner.
Jones went 2 for 3 in the nightcap and 3 for 6 on the afternoon.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Sunday, April 3, for a 1 p.m. ODAC doubleheader at Randolph.
