Box Score SALEM, Va. – Senior Alyssa Chavez (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) paced the victors with four goals as the Randolph-Macon women's lacrosse team defeated Roanoke in ODAC action Tuesday evening.
The Yellow Jackets (3-3, 1-0 ODAC) blew open a close game by outscoring the Maroons (3-4, 1-1 ODAC) 10-3 in the second half. Senior Katie Russo (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney), junior Susie Snee (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) and sophomore Alicia Hsieh (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) each added three goals, while sophomore Alex Lightfoot (Fairfax, Va./Woodson) contributed three assists for R-MC.
Snee tallied the first goal for the Yellow Jackets less than five minutes into the contest. After RC tied it, Chavez and senior Shannon Jamieson (Cypress, Texas/Cypress-Woods) both scored to give R-MC a 3-1 lead with 19:30 left in the first half. After the Maroons pulled to within one, Hsieh scored with an assist from Lightfoot to give the visitors a 4-2 advantage near the midway point of the first period. RC would score five of the next six goals to take a 7-5 lead with 10 minutes left in the half.
The Yellow Jackets would dominate the rest of the way, scoring 10 straight goals. Russo, Chavez and senior Jenelle Whitman (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) each netted goals in the final five minutes of the first half as R-MC took an 8-7 lead at intermission. The Yellow Jackets held a 20-12 advantage in shots, 10-6 in ground balls and 9-6 in draw controls.
R-MC would score the first seven goals of the second half to take control. Russo, Jamieson, Hsieh, Whitman and Snee each scored once, while Chavez had two of the final three goals in the run to give the Yellow Jackets a commanding 15-7 lead with 13:18 remaining in the contest. Hsieh, Russo and Lightfoot each added goals over the final 10 minutes to give R-MC an 18-10 victory.
The Yellow Jackets held a 36-27 advantage in shots. Snee and Hsieh paced R-MC with seven shots. Snee also led the squad with five ground balls. Snee and senior Natalie Schnell (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton) both had a pair of caused turnovers.
R-MC beat RC on draw controls 20-9, including 11-3 in the second half. Whitman led all players with eight draw controls.
Junior Allie Walker (Towson, Md./Mercy) recorded six saves for the Yellow Jackets.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Wednesday, March 30, with a 4 p.m. non-conference contest at Susquehanna.
