Box Score 2 FREDERICKSBURG, Va.—Sophomore Brandi Mulvena (Farnham, Va. / Rappahannock) scored the game-winning run in the eighth in Game 1 and freshman Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va. / Patrick Henry) struck out five in Game 2 as the Randolph-Macon softball team swept Mary Washington Tuesday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (15-5) won the first game 4-3 in eight innings and claimed the second game 3-1 to extend their win-streak to seven.
Game 1 remained scoreless through the first three innings before R-MC added two runs in the fourth. Mulvena reached on error and advanced to second on a single from senior Madison Gilman (Glen Allen, Va. / Patrick Henry). Both runners advanced on a ground out. Mulvena scored on a wild pitch to give R-MC an early 1-0 advantage. Senior Sierra Ford (Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan) singled to left field, scoring Gilman to put R-MC ahead 2-0.
The Eagles (5-13) would add a run in the fourth to make it 2-1.
Sophomore Hayden Fontenot (Lexington, Va. / Rockbridge) singled in the top of the fifth. Freshman Sarah Cimring (Chesapeake, Va. / Great Bridge) pinch ran for Fontenot and advanced to third via singles from freshman Diane McDaniel (Fauquier, Va. / Liberty) and Mulvena. Gilman singled to left field, plating Cimring to give the Yellow Jackets a 3-1 edge. The Eagles tied the score with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
The score remained tied through the seventh. Mulvena was placed on second to start the eighth and scored on an error to give the Yellow Jackets the 4-3 win.
Sophomore Nelda Bagley (6-3) struck out six in eight innings on the mound for the Yellow Jackets.
Ford doubled in the top of the second and scored on a single from junior Jen Balcom (Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan) to give the Yellow Jackets an early 1-0 advantage in the nightcap.
In the third, McDaniel singled to left field and advanced to second on a Mulvena sacrifice bunt. Gilman singled, advancing McDaniel to third. Cimring pinch ran for Gilman. Sophomore Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va. / Brunswick) reached first on an error, scoring McDaniel to put R-MC ahead 2-0. Sierra Ford singled to load the bases with one out. Cimring scored on a Balcom walk to make it 3-0.
The Eagles added a run in the bottom of the third. The score remained 3-1 through the next four innings as the Yellow Jackets took Game 2.
Whittemore raises her record to 8-2 on the season.
Randolph-Macon begins conference play on the road at Shenandoah on Friday, March 25 at 5:30 p.m.
