Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Seniors Sierra Ford (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) and Madison Gilman (Glen Allen, Va./Patrick Henry) both homered as the Randolph-Macon softball team dropped a doubleheader Wednesday at No. 12 Christopher Newport.
The Captains (8-0) took the opener 15-5 in five innings and won 10-5 in the nightcap.
After CNU scored nine in the first of Game 1, Ford belted a three-run dinger in the top of the second to put the Yellow Jackets (3-3) on the scoreboard. The Captains added three-spots in the second and third, sandwiched around RBI singles by junior Jen Balcom (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) and sophomore Brandi Mulvena (Farnham, Va./Rappahannock) in the top of the third.
Mulvena went 3 for 3 in the opener, while Balcom and Gilman both added two hits.
In Game 2, R-MC trailed 2-1 after two before Gilman's two-run blast in the top of the third gave the Yellow Jackets a 3-2 lead. The Captains quickly countered with six in the bottom of the third. Balcom added an RBI double in the sixth and Mulvena had a run-scoring single later in the frame.
Balcom finished with two hits, while sophomore Harley Jones (Broadnax, Va./Brunswick) went 2 for 3 with a double and two runs.
Randolph-Macon is scheduled to play in the Beach Blast Tournament this weekend in Virginia Beach. The Yellow Jackets should play Keuka (1 p.m.) and Rutgers-Camden (5 p.m.) on Friday, while facing Keene State (10 a.m.) and Salem (12 p.m.) on Saturday.
