Bagley, Whittemore Pitch R-MC Softball past Methodist

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Sophomore Nelda Bagley (Kenbridge, Va./Central) tossed a three-hit shutout in the opener and freshman Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Patrick Henry) allowed just two runs in going the distance in Game 2 as the Randolph-Macon softball team swept a doubleheader at Methodist on Thursday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets (13-5) took Game 1 by the score of 8-0, while taking the nightcap 4-2 over the Pride (4-14).

In the opener, Bagley (5-3) did not allow a walk and struck out six in seven innings.

R-MC started the scoring with two in the first. Freshman Diane McDaniel (Fauquier, Va./Liberty) and sophomore Brandi Mulvena (Farnham, Va./Rappahannock) both had singles and scored as the Yellow Jackets took an early 2-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets put the game away with six in the seventh. McDaniel, sophomore Harley Jones (Broadnax, Va./Brunswick) and junior Jen Balcom (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) each had RBI singles, while senior Sierra Ford (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) capped the rally with a two-run double.

McDaniel went 3 for 4 with two runs and one RBI, while Ford had two hits and two RBI for the Yellow Jackets.

In Game 2, Whittemore (7-2) gave up five hits in seven innings with one walk and seven strikeouts.

R-MC again scored in the first. McDaniel had a leadoff double and came home on a single by senior Madison Gilman (Glen Allen, Va./Patrick Henry). A double by Jones put two in scoring position. A base hit by Balcom plated Gilman and a sacrifice fly by Ford drove in Jones to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.

After Methodist scored a pair in the third, the Yellow Jackets added an insurance run in the sixth. Ford had a one-out single, moved to second on a wild pitch and came home on a base hit by sophomore Skylar Toth (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) to make it 4-2.

Gilman went 2 for 4 with one run and one RBI, while Jones had two hits and one run.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Tuesday, March 22, for a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Mary Washington.
