Migliorini Drives in Four as R-MC Outscores Alvernia

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore Cole Migliorini (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) had a three-run homer to cap a six-run sixth as the 32nd-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team defeated No. 25 Alvernia 17-13 Saturday on Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.

Migliorini went 2 for 3, scored three and drove in four. Sophomore Rick Spiers (South Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) was a homer short of the cycle, going 3 for 3 off the bench with three runs and one RBI.

Senior James Walsh (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) earned the victory, going five innings with seven hits, four runs, one walk and seven strikeouts to raise his record to 2-0.

After the Crusaders put up two in the top of the first, the Yellow Jackets answered in the bottom of the frame. Junior Jordan Schmeer (Richmond, Va./Benedictine) laced a one-out double down the right field line and came home on a two-out single to left by senior Nick Maiolo (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) to make it a 2-1 contest.

R-MC took the lead in the second. Migliorini drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a single by senior Michael Trentham (Midlothian, Va./James River), advanced to third on a walk to junior Stuart Brown (Midlothian, Va./Trinity) and tied the game on a fielder's choice by senior Michael Kroll (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry). After a single by senior Christian Sanderson (Lynchburg, Va./Jefferson Forest) loaded the bases, Brown scored the tie-breaking run on an error. Kroll came home on a fielder's choice by Schmeer to give R-MC a 4-2 advantage.

The Yellow Jackets added a run in the third as Spiers had a pinch-hit triple and scored on an error to make it 5-2.

Chris Burns belted a two-run homer in the top of the fifth for Alvernia to make it a 5-4 contest.

R-MC added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth, as Migliorini and Brown delivered RBI singles in a three-run rally to extend the lead to 8-4. Migliorini's three-run bomb highlighted the six-run sixth as the score went to 14-4. It was the first homer of the season for Migliorini.

Alvernia tallied three in the top of the seventh before the Yellow Jackets added two in the bottom of the frame to make it 16-7. Senior Travis Lodge (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) had a pinch-hit homer to lead off the eighth, his first of the season. The Crusaders scored six in the top of the ninth to make the final 17-13.

Sanderson finished with two hits and two runs, while Schmeer had two hits and two RBI for R-MC
