Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Randolph-Macon softball team sat through two lengthy rain delays in the Championship Game of the Newport News Regional at Christopher Newport.
After taking an early 4-0 lead, the Yellow Jackets (28-12) fell 11-6 to the Captains (30-7) Sunday afternoon to conclude their 2015 campaign.
The bats were hot for R-MC in the top of the first. Senior Amanda Sopko (Skippers, Va./Greensville) drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Junior Sierra Ford (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) also drew a walk. With one away, Sopko stole third. Jarvis doubled down the right field line to plate Sopko with the first run and moved Ford to third. Ford was out at the plate on a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning. Freshman Skylar Toth (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) had an RBI single to bring home Jarvis and make it 2-0. Freshman Hayden Fontenot (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge) delivered a two-run double to drive in Toth and junior Katie Woody (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) and give the Yellow Jackets a 4-0 advantage.
CNU rallied with three in the third and four in the fourth for a 7-4 lead.
R-MC got one back in the top of the fifth on a homer by junior Madison Gilman (Glenn Allen, Va./Patrick Henry) to make it a 7-5 contest.
The first rain delay came in the bottom of the fifth and lasted for 1:20. CNU would added three in the bottom of the fifth to take a 10-5 lead.
Sopko had an RBI single in the top of the sixth as the Yellow Jackets pulled within four at 10-6. CNU added one in the bottom of the frame to make it 11-6.
Woody singled in the top of the seventh and was on first with two away when the second rain delay hit, lasting 1:40. CNU recorded the final out and claimed the regional title.
Fontenot finished with two hits and two RBI, while Sopko and Gilman both had two hits, one run and one RBI for the Yellow Jackets.
Randolph-Macon, under the direction of head coach Kevin Proffitt, had three members of the All-Regional Team: Sopko, Jarvis and freshman pitcher Nelda Bagley (Kenbridge, Va./Central).
