Brown, Walsh Help R-MC Get past BC in ODAC Tourney

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Sophomore Stuart Brown (Midlothian, Va./Trinity) had two hits and three RBI, while junior James Walsh (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) allowed one unearned run in seven innings as third-seeded Randolph-Macon edged No. 4 Bridgewater 6-4 Thursday evening in the first round of the 2015 ODAC Baseball Tournament at City Stadium.

The 19th-ranked Yellow Jackets (23-7) jumped out of the gate with four in the bottom of the first. Freshman Rick Spiers (South Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) had a leadoff single and was thrown out at second trying to steal. Senior Nate Meiners (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's Prep) drew a walk, moved to third on a base hit by junior Nick Maiolo (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) and scored on an infield single by freshman Cole Migliorini (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge). Junior Mitchell Keeler (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brown delivered a two-run single to center to give R-MC a 3-0 advantage. Junior Michael Kroll (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) added a two-out RBI single to give the Yellow Jackets a 4-0 lead after one.

R-MC added a run in the fourth. Sophomore Jordan Schmeer (Richmond, Va./Benedictine) reached second on a one-out error and scored on a double by Spiers to push the Yellow Jacket lead to 5-0.

After the Eagles (23-12-1) tallied an unearned run in the top of the seventh, the Yellow Jackets responded in the bottom of the frame. Keeler had a two-out double to left center and Brown followed with a double down the left field line to plate Keeler and give R-MC a 6-1 advantage.

Walsh (6-1) allowed five hits and one unearned run in seven innings with two walks and seven strikeouts to earn the victory.

BC tallied two in the eighth and one in the ninth to make it close. Senior J.T. Williamson (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) allowed three hits and a run in the ninth in earning his league-leading sixth save.

Spiers, Maiolo and Schmeer each had two hits for the Yellow Jackets.

Randolph-Macon will play second-seeded Virginia Wesleyan on Friday, April 24 at 5 p.m. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Marlins twice during the regular season.
