Box Score 2 BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Freshman Nelda Bagley (Kenbridge, Va./Central) pitched a no-hitter with nine strikeouts in the opener as the Randolph-Macon softball team swept an ODAC doubleheader at Bridgewater Wednesday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (12-6, 6-4) won the first game 9-0 in five innings before taking the nightcap 11-0, also in five innings.
Bagley (7-2) faced just one over the minimum in the five-inning gem. She walked the second batter of the game before retiring the final 14 hitters. Bagley fanned five of the final six batters of the game, including all three in the fifth.
R-MC scored four in each of the first two innings and one in the third. Junior Katie Woody (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) had an RBI single in the first, a sacrifice fly in the second and a double in the fourth to lead the Yellow Jacket offense. Sophomore Katie Lockett (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) had a sacrifice to knock in a run in the first and an RBI double in the second. Senior Amanda Sopko (Skippers, Ba./Greensville) singled and scored in the first, and was plunked and scored in the third. She also stole three bases in the contest.
In Game 2, sophomore Kelsey McLaughlin (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) took a no-hitter into the fifth before settling for a two-hit shutout. She surrendered a pair of singles to start the inning, but neither runner would score as she coaxed a groundout, a popout and a groundout to end the contest. McLaughlin (4-4) allowed no walks and struck out one, facing just three over the minimum.
The Yellow Jackets put up crooked numbers in four of their five at-bats. Junior Madison Gilman (Glen Allen, Va./Patrick Henry) led the offense, going 4 for 4 with two doubles, two runs and four RBI. She had a two-run double in a four-run first, a base hit in a two-run second, an RBI single in a two-run fourth and an RBI double in a three-run fifth.
Senior Sharese Jarvis (Cobbs Creek, Va./Mathews) went 3 for 4 with a triple, three runs and two RBI, while Sopko went 2 for 3 with three runs. Junior Sierra Ford (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) was 2 for 3 with a double and two runs.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Saturday, April 4 for a 1:30 p.m. home ODAC doubleheader against Roanoke. It will be Senior Day for the Yellow Jackets, honoring Jarvis, Sopko and Carly Alford (Richmond, Va./Trinity).
