Box Score 2 ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Amanda Sopko (Skippers, Va./Greensville) belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh in the opener as the Randolph-Macon softball team split a season-opening doubleheader against Frostburg State on Sunday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (1-1) took the opener 3-2, while the Bobcats (1-1) posted a 3-0 victory in Game 2.
The Yellow Jackets went down early as the Bobcats scored two runs in the top of the third, but R-MC pulled back a run in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by junior Sierra Ford (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan).
The score remained that way until the bottom of the seventh inning. Freshman Addi Johnson (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) drew a walk with one out. Sopko came up with two outs and crushed a walk-off home run to give the Yellow Jackets their first win of the season.
Freshman pitcher Nelda Bagley (Kenbridge, Va./Central) started the game on the mound for R-MC and picked up her first collegiate win while recording nine strikeouts. Junior Katie Woody (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) was 1 for 2 with a walk while Johnson also added a hit.
Sophomore Kelsey McLaughlin (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) started on the mound in the second game for R-MC, throwing four innings and recording one strikeout. Frostburg State scored two runs in the top of the fourth and added another in the top of the fifth.
Woody led the Yellow Jackets from the plate, going 2 for 3 including a double. Senior Sharese Jarvis (Cobbs Creek, Va./Mathews) also had a double.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Thursday, March 12 for a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Mary Washington.
