Box Score 2 ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore Blake Saathoff (Catonsville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) capped a seven-run eighth in the opener with a two-run single as the seventh-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team split an ODAC doubleheader against No. 11 Shenandoah at Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.
The Yellow Jackets (16-3, 8-3) took Game 1 by a score of 8-6, while the Hornets (12-3-1, 9-2) won the nightcap 5-2.
R-MC trailed 6-1 in the middle of the eighth in the opener. Saathoff started the rally with a walk and moved to second on a base hit by freshman Rick Spiers (South Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca). Both runners moved up 90 feet on a single by sophomore Jordan Schmeer (Richmond, Va./Benedictine). With one away, junior Mitchell Keeler (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) had a base hit to plate Saathoff and make it 6-2. A single by junior Nick Maiolo (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) brought home Spiers and narrowed the deficit to 6-3. Junior Michael Trentham (Midlothian, Va./James River) drew a walk to drive in Schmeer and make it 6-4. Following a pitching change, junior pinch-hitter Bryan Miltenberger (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) stroked a two-run double to left to knot the score at 6-6. With two away, Saathoff singled to center to give the Yellow Jackets an 8-6 lead.
Senior JT Williamson (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) took over on the mound in the top of the ninth and was greeted by a single and a walk. He got a strikeout on a failed two-strike bunt attempt, a flyout to center and a strikeout looking to record his third save.
Keeler, Maiolo and senior Nate Meiners (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's Prep) each had two hits in Game 1 for R-MC.
The Yellow Jackets took an early lead in Game 2 as Meiners had a one-out double in the bottom of the first, stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
After SU took a one-run lead with a two-run homer in the fifth, R-MC answered in the seventh. Keeler had a leadoff single and advanced to second on a base hit by Maiolo. Freshman Cole Migliorini (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt before a sacrifice fly by Trentham plated Keeler with the tying run.
The Hornets snapped the deadlock with a run in the eighth and added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth to gain the doubleheader split.
Keeler went 2 for 4 with a run to lead the Yellow Jacket offense.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Tuesday, March 31 for a 3:30 p.m. ODAC contest at Hampden-Sydney.
