Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Nick Maiolo (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) went 6 for 6 with four runs and six RBI as the Randolph-Macon baseball team opened the 2015 campaign with a doubleheader sweep of St. Mary's Saturday afternoon at Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.
The Yellow Jackets (2-0) took the opener 6-2 before routing the Seahawks (0-2) 14-0 in the nightcap.
Maiolo had a double and reached base eight times, including drawing a walk and being hit by a pitch. He also went 3 for 3 on stolen bases.
R-MC scored a pair of unearned run in the bottom of the first in Game 1. Senior Nate Meiners (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's Prep) drew a one-out walk, stole second and moved to third on a single by Maiolo. Both scored on errors as the Yellow Jackets led 2-0.
The Yellow Jackets added three in the second. Junior Michael Kroll (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry) homered to lead off the frame. Junior Christian Sanderson (Lynchburg, Va./Jefferson Forest) was hit by a pitch and scored on a wild pitch. Junior Bryan Miltenberger (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) drew a bases-loaded walk and the lead grew to 5-0.
After St. Mary's tallied a run in the third, Maiolo added an RBI single in the fifth. He went 2 for 2 with one run and one RBI.
Junior James Walsh (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) allowed one run over four innings with one walk and three strikeouts to earn the victory. Sophomore Nic Phelps (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) surrendered an earned run over the final three innings with one strikeout to pick up the save.
R-MC used big innings in Game 2, scoring four in the third, six in the fourth and four in the fifth. Maiolo went 4 for 4 with a double, three runs and five RBI. Kroll had a pair of doubles and knocked in three. Junior Michael Trentham (Midlothian, Va./James River) added two hits and three RBI, while leadoff hitter Jordan Schmeer (Richmind, Va./Benedictine) went 2 for 2 with two walks and three runs for the Yellow Jackets.
Freshman Rick Spiers (South Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) allowed five hits over four scoreless innings to record the victory. Senior Brandon Beiler (Paradise, Pa./Pequea Valley) tossed two hitless innings and freshman Christian Cok (Chester, S.C./Lewisville) fanned three in the seventh to secure the shutout.
Randolph-Macon and St. Mary's conclude their weekend series with a single game on Sunday, Feb. 8 at 12 noon at Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.
