Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – Freshman Alex Lightfoot (Fairfax, Va./Woodson) netted four goals and added one assist as the Randolph-Macon women's lacrosse team won its home opener by the score of 12-9 Saturday afternoon at Day Field.
After a 7-7 deadlock in the first half, the Yellow Jackets (2-0) scored the first five goals of the second half to take control over the Captains (1-2).
R-MC scored three of the match's first four goals to take a quick 3-1 advantage. Lightfoot netted the second goal and assisted on the third. CNU scored three straight to assume a 4-3 lead midway through the period. With the game tied at 5, Lightfoot scored a pair late in the half to give R-MC a 7-5 edge. The Captains netted the final two goals of the period to make it 7-7 at intermission.
The Yellow Jackets dominated in the second half. Junior Shannon Jamieson (Cypress, Texas/Cypress-Woods) recorded her third goal of the match with 18:24 remaining to give R-MC the lead for good. Junior Jenelle Whitman (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) scored a minute later and Lightfoot lit the scoreboard again with 17:05 left as the Yellow Jackets took a 10-7 lead. Freshman Alicia Hsieh (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and senior Betsy Hebert (Lutherville, Md./Roland Park Country) added goals as the advantage grew to 12-7 with 11:40 remaining. CNU scored the final two goals as R-MC claimed the 12-9 victory.
R-MC held a 29-19 advantage on shots and 27-13 on ground balls.
Sophomore Allie Walker (Towson, Md./Mercy) recorded seven saves for the Yellow Jackets.
Randolph-Macon returns to action next Saturday, March 7 with a 1 p.m. match at St. Mary's.
